Giacomo Conterno Barolo 1974

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Another bottle that opens slowly, even after having been double decanted an hour or two earlier. Herbs and flowers grow in the glas before the wine is taken over by a huge blasamic note, citrussy and pine filled. There is a touch of VA adding complexity in the shoe polish register and a bit of salty seaweed as well but that fades into the background over time. In the mouth the attack promises impressive sweetness but the insane acidity washes that away and really cleanses the mouth. There remain a fair does of astringent tannins which add some fullness here. The mid-palate is full of bright wild berry/ sour cherry tones with suggestions of licorice that lead to a long tarry and spicy finish. The acid here will turn alot of people off. I can't imagine this completed malo. This was a particularly fine bottle but in general I don't see any reason to keep these. 94pts

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
