Ghost Pines Vineyard Winemaker's Blend Zinfandel San Joaquin/Sonoma County 2015

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Ghost Pines knows no boundaries. Without the restriction of traditional winegrowing boundaries, we source grapes for Ghost Pines wines solely for quality and flavor from wherever we find the best fruit. Though sourcing changes from year to year, this philosophy delivers wines of consistent quality with a distinct combination of richness, smoothness and balance that could never be mistaken for ordinary. Named for the indigenous Gray Pines dotting Northern California’s hillsides, Ghost Pines embodies the progressive spirit of California winemaking and inspires a sense of individuality. HARVEST REPORT: We selected the grapes for our Zinfandel based on overall quality and flavor. The 2015 vintage brought a lower yield of fruit but the grapes were of excellent quality with plush flavors. We sourced the grapes from several dynamic vineyard sites in Sonoma and San Joaquin Counties. WINEMAKER NOTES: The fruit for Ghost Pines Zinfandel was cold soaked for one to two days to begin the extraction of color and flavor from the skins prior to fermentation. After the cold soak, the tank was inoculated with yeast. The winemaking team kept the ferment warm, no more than 85 degrees, to restrain the rate of fermentation and balance the extraction of fruit with the extraction of tannin. The young wine was drained from the fermentor after about four days to keep the focus on the fruit flavors and prevent too much tannin from being extracted. Ghost Pines Zinfandel was aged on a combination of French and American oak staves, which gave the wine a balance of sweet aromatics, such as vanilla and caramel, as well as structure and spice. TASTE PROFILE: Our 2015 Zinfandel offers rich, complex aromas of ripe raspberry jam, cracked pepper and toasty oak. On the palate, the wine offers intense flavors of dark fruit, brown spice and cola framed by lush structure and a lingering, multi-layered finish. VARIETAL CONTENT: 97% Zinfandel 3% Petite Sirah APPELLATION: 56% Sonoma County 44% San Joaquin County ALCOHOL LEVEL: 15.06% TITRATABLE ACIDITY: 0.56g/100ml RESIDUAL SUGAR: 0.43g/100ml pH: 3.64
