Ghost Block Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2015

Member Review by Wine Fire:

This is a beautiful, balanced and elegant wine fit for royalty, but affordable to the rest of us. From uncorking through four hours, there is nothing in nose or palate that offends. Instead, a series of pleasure-giving harmonies visit in succession. The nose opens to bright tones of vanilla and honeydew melon, intermingling with notes of cherry and fragrant wild flowers. The palate launches with wild cherry, plum and an array of tart fruit flavors, followed by cloves and other spices on the finish. After an hour, a creamy honey taste spreads over the tongue and establishes a new milieu for the complex medley of flavors still evolving. Buttery oak and crème brûlée make their appearances, along with notes of burnt brown sugar and earth. The finish is elegant, lengthy and structured, supported and sustained by velvety tannins and a pleasant, zingy acidity that crowns this well-orchestrated journey with a titillating tang.

Bonded Winery #9 has 635 planted vineyard acres and the property is the ninth largest planted acreage in Napa County. The Company is committed to growing grapes without the use of chemicals. Certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers, Bonded Winery #9 uses organic vineyard management techniques. Selective leaf and shoot removal reduces fungus and mildew pressure. Cover crops like oats, peas, mustard and vetch, are planted between rows to naturally inhibit soil erosion, reduce dust, restore nutrients and encourage microbiological activity. Even grape skins and stems are composted after harvest and added back to the soil, replenishing nitrogen and potassium and increasing microbiological activity. The 635 vineyard acres are divided between Oakville (35%) and Yountville (65%), two distinguished appellations within Napa Valley. Within the vineyards are several distinctive blocks, each having a specific name. These vineyard names began making their debuts on prestigious wine labels in the late 1990’s. Read less

A bold wine with cherry and chocolate notes. Long legs suggest high alcohol content. A nice choice but not a great value.

Earthy. Tannic. Structured. Drinks elegantly but should age well. An impressive cab.

Outstanding. Hard to find sometimes on the east coast, but if you can get your hands on it - go ahead and treat yourself.

Vineyards: The fruit for the 2015 Ghost Block Cabernet Sauvignon comes from our family-owned Rock Cairn vineyard. The 30-year-old vineyard in Oakville, Napa Valley is 100% Certified Organic. This site is comprised of deep, gravelly loam with a western exposure, and the vines produce very concentrated fruit late in the season. Winemaker Notes: Kristi Koford “2015 started warmer than normal resulting in early bud break. Cold weather during berry set in the spring proved challenging since the berries didn’t all ripen at the same time, but summer was mild and the berries were small which allowed for long hang time in spite of early harvest. As a result, we had great concentration and flavor development but very low yields. The wines are bursting with flavor and dense tannins for long aging.” Tasting Notes: Intense, overt aromas of dark cherry & blackberries explode out of the glass. This wine is an elegant & balanced Oakville Cabernet on the palate with enticing flavors of deep red fruits and great structure & body; lengthened by the integrated oak notes of vanilla. These silky tannins make this wine very approachable with a long lasting finish and ready to drink upon release but bound for many cellars. Varietal Content: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Malbec 6% Petit Verdot Cooperage: Aged 24 months in French Oak, 60% new Alcohol Content: 14.5% Total Acidity: .65% pH: 3.86
