Founded in 1880, Geyser Peak Winery is one of California’s oldest and most award-winning wineries. Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley.
Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous with zip bags and Xerox is a brand synonymous with photocopy machines).
