Geyser Peak Meritage Reserve Red Table Wine-Other Ca 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine & Spirits Review The fruit is immediately present in this wine, though the firm tannins show more of the fruit skin than the juicier fresh cherry and blueberry flavors that come with air. Decant it and this elegant, balanced red is ready for lamb chops. Its length of flavor implies more complexity will develop with age. Wine Tasting Notes Smooth, rich and silky, this handcrafted wine finds its center around a deep core of blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry fruit. Spice, cedar and earth notes add complexity, but its the generous fruit and supple texture that anchor the mid-palate. Aiming for elegance over brawn, this voluptuous wine finishes with ripe tannins and a luxurious aftertaste that keeps on going. Overall, the Reserve Alexandre is a quintessential example of Alexander Valley terroir and of the regions supreme suitability for nurturing Bordeaux varieties.

Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley. Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous with zip bags and Xerox is a brand synonymous with photocopy machines).
