Founded in 1880, Geyser Peak Winery is one of California’s oldest and most award-winning wineries. Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley. Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous with zip bags and Xerox is a brand synonymous with photocopy machines). Deep inky red color. Aromas are quite pronounced, with black currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit and an herbal note of eucalyptus. Very full mouthfeel, deep and rioe with blackberry fruit, cinnamon and clove, supple tannins, black olive and more than a hint of toast. Some coffee notes, dark cacao nibs and overall an elegant presentation despite the tannic structure and bite. Could take a bit more age, but open now if you have a nice hearty meal to go with it.

Pulling out some of my 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon's for the Summer and came across one of my favorite wineries - Geyser Peak. Consistently wonderful Cabernet's and one you can always depend on for great flavor and value. I did not decant this wine tonight but did open the bottle about an hour before tasting. In my glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet in color with a bright ruby edge. Swirling the wine in my glass brought up aroma's of blackberries, cherries, anise, black pepper, and vanilla! The mouth feel is full bodied, plush, and a medium tannin structure. Over the palate, this geyser was erupting with flavor! Layers of Blackberry, Black Cherry, olive, vanilla, black pepper, and a hint of cedar. As the wine opened up more, pleasing flavors of briar berry, dark chocolate, and ginger developed into a long, elegant finish. This would be an excellent wine to pair with a grilled steak, roast leg of lamb, a spicy tomato pasta dish, and medium to strong cheeses. This is a complex Cabernet with lots of concentrated layers. Full bodied, elegant, and the tannins have just started to soften a bit. I think this is a great representation of the Geyser Peak Cabernet Sauvignon style! I really liked this wine and give it 90 points. If you have a 2007 vintage, I feel you can enjoy it up through 2015. WineSplashing!!

Berries and cherries dominate both the nose and palate of this wine. Blackberries and red Bing cherries are most distinct, though hinting notes of marionberries are there as well. The traditional methods of the winemaker come through in the balance of acid and tannin that create a great opportunity to age the wine or drink it earlier if desired. Fantastic when paired with marinated and grilled red meats.

This red displays savory herb, sage, cedar and currant notes, with a licorice edge to the dried berry flavors. Drink now through 2016. 6,000 cases made. -JL Shows strong, extracted blackberry and black cherry flavors, with a pie-filling spicy intensity. Almost too much of a good thing. Might improve a little in the bottle with a year or two. - S.H. ** SOLD OUT **

This wine's clean red fruit expands with air, developing subtle notes of cassis and spice. It's an elegant cabernet, ready to decant and an easy match for roast leg of lamb.

Rich, full-bodied, ripe and intense, with mocha and dill-laced currant, turning oakier while gaining depth and complexity. More drying on the finish. Drink now through 2016. 3,000 cases made. -JL

A deep dense ruby color, this sumptuous Cabernet explodes with expressive aromas of black cherry and cassis complimented by notes of black pepper, mocha, and vanilla. The palate is a mouthful of juicy ripe berries and spice, seamlessly integrated into a long finish of fine grained tannins. The classic steakhouse wine, pair with well marbled rib eye, a New York steak or rack of lamb

Winemaker Darrel Groom gained invaluable experience producing Penfolds Grange in Australia. Now he operates Geyser Peak where he turns out first rate Sonoma county wines like this Reserve3 Cab. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points and said "This is a big, tannic and dry Cabernet, but it’s very elegant, and shows the pedigree of Alexander Valley at its best. Impeccably balanced in acidity and tannins, the fruit is pure blackberries and black currants, with a wonderful earthiness suggesting dried sage and thyme. Should develop nicely over the next 6–8 years."
