Founded in 1880, Geyser Peak Winery is one of California’s oldest and most award-winning wineries. Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley. Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous with zip bags and Xerox is a brand synonymous with photocopy machines). This was brought in for the owners to taste and we got the remainder to taste from. This is drinking fabulously right now! Perfectly ripe cab nose and the palate follows suit. Delicious. Drink now. It's peaked. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 2/20/10

On the nose there are loads of soft red fruit and some mineral. Lovely ripe fruit, it's drinking great right now. Rich and decadent feel. Tons of red berry and some floral notes.

Black currant and peppery, fine and thick. I liked it! It was a nice evening and everyone's power was off in the neighborhood!

Wine Tasting NotesRichly colored, this powerful wine shows heady aromas of blackberry and blueberry fruit, as well as sweet vanillin oak and a hint of mint. Rich and decadent on the palate, the wine's power cedes to a pleasing, underlying elegance, both voluptuous and tannic at the same time. Flavors of blueberry and black cherry are underlain by a fine seam of acidity, which mingles with tannins and fruit on a persistent finish.

Sweet smells of cherries and raspberries are overlain by a blanket of creamy oak in the nose, but this very solid, well-structured wine proves to be anything but a near-term confection once in the mouth. It is not overly tough, but it is built with

95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% ShirazThe deep ruby color of this sumptuous Cabernet gives way to expressive aromas of white pepper, dark berry fruit and cassis. Aging in French oak barrels softens the otherwise firm tannins and introduces hints of toasted vanilla and leather on the palate. Luscious blueberry and blackberry flavors are refined and perfectly balanced by a spiciness that lingers on a long and elegant finish.

An Alexander Cabernet for this price? The Geyser Peak Vineyard was established in 1880 and contniues to produce award winning wines today. This Cabernet exhibits its varietal characteristics with grace. Cassis, chocolate, and black plum flavors abound, with silky tannins finsih out the palate.
