Geyerhof Grüner Veltliner Rosensteig 2008

Member Review by Constance Chamberlain:

The LA Times Wine of the Week: "Fresh and crisp with classic notes of green apple, pear and white pepper, the 2008 Geyerhof Grüner Veltliner "Rosensteig" is a tremendous buy at less than $20 and a great introduction to this Austrian varietal. Its flavor profile means it drinks beautifully with raw shellfish, Dungeness crab, and seafood salads and pasta. Steamed mussels and clams harmonize with the wine too. For sushi, it's also a fine choice." (02/25/10) Geyerhof is situated on the southern slopes of the Danube Valley east of Krems and forms part of the Lower Austrian wine region known as Kremstal (Krems Valley). Here, Josef and Ilse Maier cultivate 15 hectares of vineyards in optimal sites which are distinguished by their proximity to the Danube River. Noticeable temperature differences between day and night encourage the development of distinctive aromas and from the basis for top-quality wines. The special character and personality of the wines are however marked by Josef and Ilse Maier's passion for wine and love for nature as well as tradition and joie de vivre, all of which influence their way of life and their decisions.
