Gérard Bertrand Vin de Pays d'Oc Cigalus 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Gerard Bertrand quickly developed a wine merchant business by selecting winemakers and estates that shared his sense of what was called for. In order to express his talent as a winemaker beyond his native appellation of the Corbières, he chose to invest in other wines of the Languedoc with strong potential. In 1994 he bought the Cigalus Vin de Pays d’Oc parcels, then three years later the 58 hectares of Château Laville-Bertrou in Minervois La Livinière. A forerunner in the Languedoc, Gerard Bertrand understood the evolution in consumer behavior towards expressive, well-balanced and elegant wines. By offering great wines at fair prices his success was immediate. The Prestige Wines of Gerard Bertrand quickly became the quality reference in the opinion of the professionals. In the footsteps of his father, Gerard has been contributing to the epic story of the Languedoc in these past years; he is the payee of the qualitative changes made to a good number of Languedoc terroirs and estates. He notably defends Boutenac as a terroirs and fights for its recognition by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine). In return of his efforts, and as a proof of the quality of his wines, consumers quickly take up Gerard Bertrand’s wines and repeat it again … the development of his business acknowledges this success. Tight on the nose with aromas of black currants and black raspberries over a base of smoldering herbs, soft wood, chalk and clay. This is very tight on entry but at the same time very well-balanced and showing some juicy, oozing notes of black currant fruit framed with hints of fennel seed, toasted oak and plummy fruit. There's not much detail here at the moment as this is laden with super ripe tannins that forms a cage around the core of fruit. The finish is rich, powerful and long with graphite, mocha and coffee accents as well as a touch of heat. This needs time to integrate but looks to have excellent potential for improvement over the mid-term. 93pts

blend of syrah, grenache, and cinsault. a funky nose, more earthy and meant to be drunk with food. skunk nose to start and then red fruit of raspberries, strawberries, watermelon. quite complex for a rose
