Gérard Bertrand Tautavel Grand Terroir 2011
Harvested manually, the grapes are separated from their stalks (de-stemming) before being placed in vats for maceration for 10 to 15 days. The grape varieties are vinified separately before being blended according to each grape quality. Pumping and maturing allow the "best" of the skins to be extracted before pressing. After 10 months in barrels, the wine is then aged in bottles before being released. Ideal at 64°F with pepper grilled, grilled red meat and mature cheeses. Tautavel produces a wine with exceptional style and a bouquet of ripe fruits (blackcurrants, blackberries), crystallized fruit and spices. The wine offers depth on the palate and a pleasant sweet finish with long tannins with light spices. "This is an immediately attractive and approachable wine, with direct and intense aromas and flavors of black cherry, plum and boysenberry accented by notes of sweet smoke, mocha and pepper. Firm yet approachable, this is well-balanced with structured tannins and ample acidity." —Wine Enthusiast (91 Points)
Black and blue fruits on the nose that match the entry. Fruit forward with good acidity that turns to strong tannins and a long finish.Quality wine.
The reliable and good price-to-quality wines of Bertrand hit the mark again here: there is a lot of wild blueberry, service berry and sweet cherry on the nose due, no doubt to a good dose of Syrah and Mourvedre. The entry is dominated by more blueberry and cherry with a relatively smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Finish is manly (alcoholic) but satisfying and invigorating. Lots of fruit and power here with a clean elegance (although there is some residual acerbity) on the palate. 88 points.
Rich, deep, ripe berry flavors with soft tannin and a leathery finish. Received as a gift but would definitely buy again in the $15 range. Would be great with a steak.
