Gerard Bertrand Syrah-Carignan Minervois 2008

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine is a brooding dark color in the glass, and the nose is a pleasant combination of blackberry, cocoa powder and a hint of coffee. The taste is somewhat less fruity than I would have expected given the nose, but it was quite nice, with initial flavors of tart cherry and black currant, which gave way to some chalky earth and green herbs midpalate. The finish was just lovely, with some dark chocolate notes over some evolving tannins that made way for a long, smooth, dry finish. Gerard Bertrand quickly developed a wine merchant business by selecting winemakers and estates that shared his sense of what was called for. In order to express his talent as a winemaker beyond his native appellation of the Corbières, he chose to invest in other wines of the Languedoc with strong potential. In 1994 he bought the Cigalus Vin de Pays d’Oc parcels, then three years later the 58 hectares of Château Laville-Bertrou in Minervois La Livinière. A forerunner in the Languedoc, Gerard Bertrand understood the evolution in consumer behavior towards expressive, well-balanced and elegant wines. By offering great wines at fair prices his success was immediate. The Prestige Wines of Gerard Bertrand quickly became the quality reference in the opinion of the professionals. In the footsteps of his father, Gerard has been contributing to the epic story of the Languedoc in these past years; he is the payee of the qualitative changes made to a good number of Languedoc terroirs and estates. He notably defends Boutenac as a terroirs and fights for its recognition by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine). In return of his efforts, and as a proof of the quality of his wines, consumers quickly take up Gerard Bertrand’s wines and repeat it again … the development of his business acknowledges this success. This 2008 - 50/50 Blend of Syrah and Carignan from Languedoc-Roussillon, France is very good. Deep ruby color with a tight rim variation. Fruit notes of blackberries, prune and black currents with a hint of pepper and slight minerality. It has a long finish on the palette with mid acidity. This wine has not peaked and will mature nicely over time (2016-2018). Best served chilled to 62 degrees, double decanted and served with a roasted pork loin.
