Gerard Bertrand Minervois les Matins d'Aurore 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Gerard Bertrand quickly developed a wine merchant business by selecting winemakers and estates that shared his sense of what was called for. In order to express his talent as a winemaker beyond his native appellation of the Corbières, he chose to invest in other wines of the Languedoc with strong potential. In 1994 he bought the Cigalus Vin de Pays d’Oc parcels, then three years later the 58 hectares of Château Laville-Bertrou in Minervois La Livinière. A forerunner in the Languedoc, Gerard Bertrand understood the evolution in consumer behavior towards expressive, well-balanced and elegant wines. By offering great wines at fair prices his success was immediate. The Prestige Wines of Gerard Bertrand quickly became the quality reference in the opinion of the professionals. In the footsteps of his father, Gerard has been contributing to the epic story of the Languedoc in these past years; he is the payee of the qualitative changes made to a good number of Languedoc terroirs and estates. He notably defends Boutenac as a terroirs and fights for its recognition by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine). In return of his efforts, and as a proof of the quality of his wines, consumers quickly take up Gerard Bertrand’s wines and repeat it again … the development of his business acknowledges this success. Quite an impressive nose rich with dried meat and black pepper aroma over intriguing blue floral, red cherry and blackberry fruit dotted with hints of candle wax and fragrant clean oak. This is rich and powerful with broad shoulders entering the mouth and delivering cocoa-tinged game, mineral, oak and earthy flavors tinged with a hint of fig. It's also really tight with lots of powdery tannins on the palate and some dusty confectioners sugar notes on the back end. There is great focus here, and excellent balance, I just don't know where this is going to go, but it reminds me in a way of the Achaval Ferrer Single Vineyard Malbecs, which age quite well. 90pts with room for improvement.

Awesome wine for a great price - Gentle flavours with room to grow - Blackcurrant flavours, medium-full bodied - maybe slightly tannic.

Gerard Bertrand is by far one of the most dynamic and brilliant winemakers from the South of France. He owns no less than seven estates nestling nicely among the most prestigious terroirs of Languedoc Roussillon.Gerard Bertrand was named in 2012 as the European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast and Red Wine Maker of the Year by the IWC.Grapes: 40% Grenache blanc, 40% Marsanne and 20% ViognierRegion: France / Languedoc RoussillonMaker: Gerard BertrandNotes: Pale yellow colour with green tints. The nose is complex, both floral (laurel, acacia or box wood) and fruity (exotic and citrus fruits). Very aromatic mouth with a nice acidity level. Grades of fresh fruits and a smooth finish. Very enjoyable and easydrinking wine due to its aromatic freshness.Serve: To be served at 12-13c with hot and salty starters, fish, poultry fresh cheeses.
