Georges Duboeuf Morgon Jean Descombes 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Decidedly beefy on the nose with earthy and autumnal accents to the dark cherry berry fruit. Moderately rich on entry this shows off attractive structure supporting slightly chewy mineral flecked dark berry fruits. There’s a late arriving beefy note along with some dried strawberry and nuanced dried herb flavors on the backend that turn a bit floral and violetty on the moderately long and firm finish. This can certainly improve in the cellar. 88pts

Georges and Franck Dubœuf have made a thorough selection of wines from Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Bordeaux, the Loire and Languedoc, while giving champagne the prestigious pride of place it deserves. Bruno Vertut and Alain Beaurin, who staff the cellar, deliver specific advice recommending combinations of wine and food, making the most of a customer’s budget or suggesting new discoveries. A neat blend of refinement and relaxation make this a cellar for both ordinary wine-lovers and connoisseurs. Dubœuf, rue Marbeuf, a cellar like every cellar should be, where you quite simply find good bottles at the nicest price, together with the pleasure of getting sound and considerate advice. Georges and Franck Dubœuf have won recognition for their expertise in the art of wine tasting and selection, a perfect illustration of which is their cellar, just off the Champs Élysées. More than anything else, their one wish is to perpetuate, on Rue Marbeuf, one of the capital’s most Parisian shopping streets, a product marked by trade-mark simplicity and excellent value for money. This is where you find the best of the wine range from Georges Dubœuf. Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages rub shoulders with the 10 Beaujolais vintages of Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié and Saint-Amour. Plus the Mâcon appellations of Mâcon, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint Véran. Whether fruity or flowery, lively or potent, for immediate opening or for long stays in a cellar, they all illustrate to perfection their Beaujolais, Mâcon and Burgundy identity. Read less

Less beefy than the house bottling this none the less shows some bloody, meaty aromas paired with chamomile and dried herb aromas over a base of wild berry fruits. A bit blocky in the mouth, this has bright acidity adding a soft orange rind cast the the wild strawberry fruits on the palate and the tannins still show a bit of firmness warranting another year or two in the cellar. The finish is tight and a touch austere, very firm and ultimately rather long and frankly elegant even though there is a toughness to the tannins. For the future. 88pts

With a nice scent of raspberry with a hint of banana and candy apple, this Morgon is quite on; the entry is smooth, somewhat light for the Cru, but still meaty and gritty with moderate tannin. There is raspberry and cream on the medium finish. Will age a few years, but excellent for current drinking. Good Price to Quality and far, far superior to a simple Village wine. 89 points.

The appearance, as with many younger Beaujolais wines, is fresh and bright. Cherries and fresh raspberries are immediately apparent in the nose, but some vigorous swirling will reveal dried apricots and smokiness. Racy and streamlined, the acidity gives this wine its backbone with the delicate tannins rounding out the mouthfeel. This is a light-bodied wine that is both incredibly food-friendly and delicious on its own. Read more about this wine and others at: http://bit.ly/gznJmK

The best one word description you can give to this wine is, "consistent". Since the early 1990’s Parker has scored it between 88 and 91 points every year. Grapes are 100% old vine Gamay, sourced from the vineyard at the Descombes estate. The wine is also produced and bottled on site, in the Cru Beaujolais village of Morgon. Georges DuBouef’s team imparts their expertise and insures that the quality is superior while the price remains incredibly affordable. The 2009 was a Wine Spectator Top 100. The Spectator scored this 2011 91 points saying "Like berries freshly picked on a summer day, the raspberry and strawberry notes here are ripe and pure, mixing with hints of pekoe tea leaf, mineral, ground anise and damson preserves. An elegant and balanced version. Drink now through 2018."

Still in tank when I tasted it in June Duboeuf s 2010 Morgon Domaine des Versauds offers ripe purple plum and dark cherry tinged with coriander and shadowed aromatically by suggestions of plum and kirsch distillate. A welcome exuberance of juicy fruit allows the piquancy of fruit pit to serve as stimulating counterpoint rather than compounding the bitterness borne of extraction that one finds in some of the Duboeuf 2010s. A rare instance where the 2010 version of a wine is more convincing than the 2009 this excellent value will probably also merit several years of attention. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

A firmly terroir-driven wine, solidly based on its tannins and the richest of red fruits. Very mineral, chewy at this young stage, densely concentrated, the acidity a sharp light through the fruit. Powerful stuff. Wine Enthusiast. A spicy thread of sandalwood cardamom and anise focuses flavors of ripe raspberry black cherry and plum. It s bright and lightly grippy with a moderate finish. Drink now through 2015. 5 000 cases made. -AN Wine Spectator.
