Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Burgundy 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Beaujolais Nouveau is a purple-pink wine that is particularly lightweight, even by the standards of Beaujolais. The method of production means that there is very little tannin, and the wine can be dominated by fruity, ester flavours of bananas and pear drops. These are enhanced by the frequent recommendation to serve the wine lightly chilled, at approximately 13°C (55°F).

Georges and Franck Dubœuf have made a thorough selection of wines from Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Bordeaux, the Loire and Languedoc, while giving champagne the prestigious pride of place it deserves. Bruno Vertut and Alain Beaurin, who staff the cellar, deliver specific advice recommending combinations of wine and food, making the most of a customer’s budget or suggesting new discoveries. A neat blend of refinement and relaxation make this a cellar for both ordinary wine-lovers and connoisseurs. Dubœuf, rue Marbeuf, a cellar like every cellar should be, where you quite simply find good bottles at the nicest price, together with the pleasure of getting sound and considerate advice. Georges and Franck Dubœuf have won recognition for their expertise in the art of wine tasting and selection, a perfect illustration of which is their cellar, just off the Champs Élysées. More than anything else, their one wish is to perpetuate, on Rue Marbeuf, one of the capital’s most Parisian shopping streets, a product marked by trade-mark simplicity and excellent value for money. This is where you find the best of the wine range from Georges Dubœuf. Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages rub shoulders with the 10 Beaujolais vintages of Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié and Saint-Amour. Plus the Mâcon appellations of Mâcon, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint Véran. Whether fruity or flowery, lively or potent, for immediate opening or for long stays in a cellar, they all illustrate to perfection their Beaujolais, Mâcon and Burgundy identity. Read less

cherries, strawberries and bubblegum, naturally very fruit forward, nice soft tannic structure, enjoyable for thanksgiving appetizer hour, for my turkey, definitely a pinot noir

Served slightly chilled. Clear purple in the glass. Straight to the point Beaujolais Nouveau with cherry and berry flavors and the characteristic banana overtones. Bright acidity. Light body. This isn't an overly complex wine but in all fairness, it isn't supposed to be. Simple and enjoyable.

Again, like the Mommessin Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau, this primeur is dark - though not quite so midnight black. The nose is more typical of macération carbonique (banana, papaya) but also more reminiscent of stems. There are also notes piquant - just a little spritz on the tongue. Less body, more acid, thinner with fewer helpful hints of promise for the more serious Crus that will follow in 18 months time. Typical Debeouf quality - if just a bit off for such a splendiferous vintage.

Brand new, fresh off the bottling line, its this year's Nouveau! Super fruity, soft and fresh - lots of strawberries throughout. Some cherry after a few seconds in the mouth and even a little mint on the finish.

Not much of a nose on this one. Juicy red berry fruit. Good acid. Candied fruit. Pear flavors. Nice, sweet fruit flavors. 11/19/11

As far as a nouveau goes, this one is nice. Not too young or pungent, but nicely balanced and of course brightly colored and very forward style.

Beaujolais Villages is a blend of Gamay grapes from the various Cru Villages in Beaujolais. A distinct cut above regular Beaujolais due to the pedigree and from a distinctly superior producer, Georges Duboeuf. The Duboeuf name is synonymous with Beaujolais and through his many holdings and contracts he is able to source the best grapes available. 2009 was a benchmark vintage for Beaujolais. The Wine Advocate aid this wine was an "excellent value describing it as "brimming with ripe blackberry and cassis; mouth-filling and plush; and retaining an attractive primary juiciness and hint of berry skin tartness that serves for some invigoration as well as contrast to the wine’s sense of sweetness in the finish." An ideal choice for warm weather sipping.

An aromatic red, well-structured, with subtle black cherry, boysenberry and exotic spice notes. Clean and elegant, with a fresh finish.

An intense, brilliant cherry color with purplish tints. Complex nose with red and black berry aromas (raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants). A smooth wine with fine tannins, harmonious and complete.

Beaujolais nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks then officially released for sale on the third Thursday of November. This "Beaujolais Day", or "Beaujolais Nouveau Day" sees heavy marketing from the producers, with races to get the first bottles of the vintage to different markets.

According to the Wine Advocate: Duboeuf s largest single cuvee their 2009 Beaujolais-Villages, assembled from six different villages and 15 lots from different growers, and destined for the U.S. is brimming with ripe blackberry and cassis; mouth-filling and plush; and retaining an attractive primary juiciness and hint of berry skin tartness that serves for some invigoration as well as contrast to the wine s sense of sweetness in the finish...an excellent value that far surpasses the quality of the corresponding 2008.
