- Vincent Geantet was more expansive than usual saying that 2005 gave him 20% lower than average yields. I was perhaps too severe in my pruning but better too little than too much. The low yields gave excellent sugars and I didn't have to chaptalize at all. The crop was super clean and that in one sense is almost disappointing as I have a new sorting system that extends fully 10 meters with different stations so that the grapes can almost be inspected one by one. In 2005 however, my new system, which wasn't cheap, didn't really help much. But in 2006 it was indispensable and unlike some read more...of my neighbors, I'm excited about my '06s. But back to the '05s, I think it's a terrific vintage as the skins were thick and the extractions happened easily. The wines are concentrated and blessed with really ripe phenolics plus they're balanced and will age slowly. It's one of those rare vintages that has so much fat that the wines will be approachable young but should age magnificently well. In this aspect, it reminds me of the 1990s, which have pretty much always drunk well. I have been visiting this domaine for a long time, in fact Geantet was one of the first people I met when I began visiting Burgundy years ago. I have always liked the wines and collected them selectively with pretty good results over time but I must say that I have never seen a better vintage than 2005 at this domaine. The Geantet wines tend to emphasize fruit rather than structure but in '05 there is a more interesting balance between the two elements. In particular, don't miss the old vine En Champs if you can find it but almost any of the wines are worth a close look. Note that none of the wines had been racked and thus were in varying stages of evolution. Geantet indicated that if it was not too cold he would probably bottle in January. Note: from a mix of vines planted between 1922 and 1961 that average 60 years of age This too is very fresh with deeper register aromas of red berry, black cherry and briar plus traces of game, smoke and iron that merge into concentrated, intense and mouth coating flavors that possess excellent vivacity and punch on the persistent finish. Like the prior wine, the structural elements are ripe and this should age well. Recommended. (hide)
