Gb Burlotto-Barolo Monvigliero 1995

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Exotic on the nose with it’s mélange of olive, thyme, anise seed, and black raspberry fruit. In the mouth this is rich with cherry fruit layered with earth and leather all wrapped in a dense silky, succulent package. The inner mouth perfumes of rosehips in alcohol and black fruits add to the complexity and depth here, which drives through the long, aromatic black-fruited finish. Just so distinctive. 93pts

Our wines are created in an ancient structure, which surrounds an interior garden. Fermentation takes place in a wide area with huge windows, in barrels of French Oak which of 50 to 70 hectoliters and the temperature of the musts can be controlled. In the adjacent area, steels containers are used for the lactic fermentation and for the last phase of aging wines. The aging is done in two brick vaulted cellars: one is only partly underground which has thermal variations particularly adapted for stabilizing the wines, housing the wines to be consumed when young (Pelaverga, Dolcetto and Barbera.), the other cellar is totally underground and has 80% humidity with a constant temperature, used for the delicate phase of aging in wooden caskets for the most important wines like our Barolo. After bottling, the wines complete the aging process and the bottles are piled for settling, before labeling and packaging. Read less

Intense notes of incense and candlewax immediately emerge from the glass joined by dark, smoky, slightly jammy fruits with complicating notes of fish sauce, underbrush, tapenade, thyme and olive oil. In the mouth he tannins are delicate and light if abundant giving the wine a velvety texture. The rosehip and wild cherry fruit is framed by vitamin like mineral notes and a wonderful inner mouth perfume of roses and tapenade. Still youthful this is emerging from its shell and has a very promising future. 93pts.

The nose showed black olive tapenade with mineral penny and dusty sour cherry. The first impression on the palate is how this wine starts sour and as it works its way across the palate, becomes massive. Flavors of cranberry and wild berries with an herbal quality linger on the long finish and gives way to a tannic tug on your palate.

Orange red amber in color which comes across as slightly more advanced than its age. At first opening an intense aroma of herbal tea with honey and lavender but as the hours wear the details begin to show black olives, dried flowers, tobacco and roasted chestnuts. This gorgeous Barolo glides across the palate and shows a wonderful coming of age for this emerging wine showing olive, meat broth, minerals, mushrooms and a bit of cherry fruit. The finish is long and coats your mouth with cherry, savory broth and minerals. WOW!

This is what I love about Barolo. A wine you can spend the entire night with and never tire of. Each sip is sensual and fulfilling. Each sniff seems to go on for minutes and you never tire of it. Very much the case with the 1995 Butlotto Barolo Monvigliero. The nose is probably not for everyone but it's perfect for me. Intense olive tapenade, strawberry patch, tobacco leaf and cedar. The palate is full, even soft after being opened for many hours but so enjoyable with sweet red fruit, minerally soil and a bit of iodine. The finish is long and subtle but consistent. A great bottle of wine that is really in a great drinking window.
