Gascon Reserva Malbec 2008
Burgeoning with distinctive dark fruit flavors and aromas, this full-bodied, intensely flavorful wine offers layers of ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry, accented by hints of chocolate and black pepper. Round tannins and final notes of brown spice and oak combine to create a firm, persistent finish. 92% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc.
Don Miguel Gascón wines reflect Argentina’s rich winemaking history, capturing the true expression of the country’s most renowned grape, Malbec. Our high altitude vineyards in the famed Mendoza region produce Malbec grapes with extraordinary color, body, aroma and structure. The result is an elegant Malbec with concentrated flavors and exceptional balance.
I'm a huge fan of most Mendoza Malbecs I've tried. This one just didn't do it for me. The character and berry notes you generally expect in a Malbec were almost completely masked by an oakiness and spiciness. Even after decanting for a while it was too overpowering for me to enjoy. If you're a fan of oaky cabs or perhaps some of the more heavy Bordeauxs then you may enjoy this, just don't go into expecting the usual Malbec character.
I had this by the glass in a restaurant. I liked it so well, I ordered a second glass, which is unlike me. I loved the chocolate aftertaste. I just purchased a bottle of the Reserva 2008. My response is the same. I love it! FYI - I am a fan of northern Italian wines and tend to like earthy wines that are less "berryish". My husband likes "berryish" wines. He likes this wine too. It is one of the rare wine that pleases both of us.
