Winemaker Tasting Notes: Notes of strawberry and kiwi highlight our Rosé. Fresh and full of fruit, this wine exhibits just a hint of spice, has a wonderful, round mouth-feel and a smooth finish. We suggest serving this wine well chilled, as it is a perfect choice to complement warm weather picnics, barbeques and outdoor meals. Vintage & Harvest Notes: The 2005 season started three weeks ahead of schedule as unseasonably warm weather in March caused an early bud break. Late spring and summer were characterized by an extremely mild and temperate growing season which allowed the grapes a steady read more...maturation, maximizing hang time on the vine. The season's consistently moderate weather allowed for full development of flavors, while the sugar production was kept at moderate levels. Winemaking Notes: Gann Family Cellars Alexander Valley Ensemble Rosé is produced from three different varietals from our Estate Vineyard in Healdsburg, Sonoma County. We use a blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 20% Zinfandel. After all the red grapes were crushed, a portion of the juice was siphoned from the tank using the classic rosé winemaking process called saignée. By separating the wine from the skins, little color or tannins are extracted from that portion of the grape. Each varietal was barreled separately and allowed to age for 6 months. The three Rosé wine components were blended together in advance of bottling. - Rosé, or “beach” wines as one French chef I worked with referred to them, are often overlooked in the dead of winter. In the USA, they are often overlooked altogether. This is really a shame as these tannin-free wines give so much sheer, sensual pleasure and ask for so little in return. Winemaker Chris Knedel, brother to Gretchen, who, along with husband Michael Gann Schmahl, owns the Gann Family Vineyard, crafts this beefy blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 20% Zinfandel using the classic rosé winemaking process, saignée, or “bleeding.” In this process, a portion of the juice from read more...just crushed red wine grapes is drained off to concentrate what remains. This bled juice has lots of flavor, a bit of pink color, and no tannins. Knedel ages each component separately for six months in barrel before bottling. This bright pink wine has strawberry, rhubarb, banana, guava, pineapple, and papaya notes. It is medium bodied, tropical, and very slightly sweet. (hide)
