Winemaker's Notes:

Vintage - 2006 The Barossa valley experienced late opening rainfall after one of the driest autumns of the century. Despite this, winter rainfall was slightly above average, with relatively mild weather. Late December and early January saw a series of heatwaves, which slowed vegetative growth particularly on Shiraz. March then recorded precipitation approximately 50mm above average, however this did not slow ripening. Overall crops were lower than the previous vintage, with less colour and finer flavours. Vintage reports courtesy of the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia Winemaking The fruit was fermented for 10 days on skins at 18-23° in open fermenters. The wine was then cold pressed and underwent partial barrel fermentation followed by natural malolactic fermentation before racking. The gross lees were left in contact with the wine and stirred in barrel, to enhance the typical Barossa earthy, truffle characters in the finished wine. Tasting Note Earth and spice, some dusty notes from the fine-grained French oak add futher interest and complexity. Briary fruit and blackcurrant notes also provide a freshness to the nose. The 06 Reiver shows more restraint than previous vintages and will take a few months to begin to blossom in bottle. Flavours of dark chocolate, Satsuma plums and crushed leaves mingle with supple tannin and refreshing acidity. Cellaring Will evolve nicely for 8-10 years.

An amazing wine. Very fruit driven with aromas of black cherry with hints of smoked meats. Full-bodied, jammy, plush with supple, ripe tannins.

An excellent shiraz for a guy who hasn't gotten into shiraz simply because it tends to be so overblown. This bad boy is overblown, but it also balances a sense of earth/terroir. And it's BIG. I also think I've found another reason I'm not sold yet on shiraz - the ones I've had, including this excellent selection - are pretty one-dimensional. Like a Petite Sirah. Blockbuster yes. Depth? Not really. For those who love shiraz, this should be on your list .. Doubt I paid $60 for it at K&L Wines in San Francisco though! At least I hope not! I can buy Burgundy for that. The "Savitar" and Blue Eyed Boy are next on the list to try ...

The Shiraz lineup begins with 2006 Shiraz andldquo;Jesterandrdquo; which was aged for 12 months in French and American oak. Like the Cabernet, 20% dried grapes were included in the blend. Purple-colored, it offers up an expressive nose of cedar, spice box, smoke, pepper, and blueberry. Medium to full-bodied and supple-textured, the wine has a forward personality with layers of spicy fruit and some elegance. It is for drinking over the next 10 years. It is an outstanding value.

Chocolaty rich, this has youthful, dense purple fruit bound by black, bitter chocolate tannin. Decant it for a thick-cut steak.

A great buy, the plump, juicy, succulent 2002 Shiraz Jester (4,000 cases produced) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of macerated black cherries, black currants, licorice, and pepper. Sweet, ripe, and concentrated, it will provide a hedonistic mouthful of Shiraz over the next 4ndash;5 years.

The dense ruby/purple-colored 2001 Shiraz Jester reveals copious quantities of rich cassis and blackberry fruit, a gentle touch of wood, sweet tannin, surprising elegance and finesse, and fine flavor authority as well as density. Drink this creamy-textured Shiraz over the next 7ndash;8 years. This new winery is a partnership of Ben Glaetzer and Frank Mitolo. According to the importer, no expense will be spared in producing these wines from this McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyard. One hundred percent new French oak is utilized. These are both imposing newcomers to Australiarsquo;s high quality wine sweepstakes.

Flowery, blueberry, and raspberry-like notes cascade from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged Shiraz. Elegant and medium-bodied, with hints of minerals, flowers, and blue as well as red fruits, it tastes like a Shiraz made with a Pinot Noir-like sensitivity. Stylish and elegant, it should be enjoyed over the next 3ndash;4 years.
