Gallo Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Sonoma Reserve 2005

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

This is an astonishing value, especially from such a prestigious appellation. Has a silky texture and lush but dry flavors of cherries, raspberries, herbs, mushrooms, coffee and clove. Try with pork tenderloin with plum sauce. With more than 30,000 cases produced, this should be easy to find.

Most of the fruit for this cooler climate Pinot Noir comes from Sonoma County. The brilliant berry nose coupled with a touch of sweet oak on the finish is a nice match with lighter fare such as grilled fish and chicken.

A terrific wine at a giveaway price, this coastal bottling shows a rich, complex texture and is very dry. The flavors unfold one by one on the palate: cherries, cocoa, cola, plums, blackberries and spices are highlighted by a burst of crisp acids.

A bit divisive among our panelists, with one finding it rather light and lacking in intensity, while others found virtue in its understated yet varietally correct nature. Cola and cherry flavors finish clean and fresh.

Fruity and supple, this young, jammy wine is easy to drink. It has rich, juicy flavors of newly crushed berries and a slight grassiness that freshens it. So rich it seems almost sweet, but it's dry, with soft tannins.

Well-balanced for the vintage, with tasty plum, black cherry, anise and cola flavors that are focused.
