Editorial Reviews for Gaja Winery Sperss Barbera Nebbiolo Piedmonte Langhe
Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above.Minty and grassy on the nose with a bit of wood still showing and a curious combination of fresh fruit and evolved soy and dried mushroom tones. There are cocoa and truffle hints to the fruit, which has a bit of bitterness to it as well as aromas that recall Cabernet Franc. At first this is elegant in the mouth then dry, woody tannins take hold and give this a hard, short feel. The flavors are tending to the evolved end of the spectrum, with sweet toasted oak and dark cherry fruit trying to balance the soy and earth tones. Overall this is rather lightweight on the palate with the texture dominated by the off-puttingly dry tannins. 86pts

Add your reviewA mid ruby red in the glass with a nose that needed some coaxing. Tight. When it comes forward the aromas of blackberries, strawberries and light rose are there in typical style. Full bodied and mouth coating, good firm tannins and a long finish. Luscious mid palate, lots of fruit, well balanced, opulent and structured. 93 Points
This barbaresco was young when we drank it but it lived up to the Gaja name as usual. I can see where more aging would greatly enhance this ruby red. It had medium body with berry, licorice and spicy notes. Good tannins and a long finish. http://www.deepredcellar.com
[Gaja Winery] Captivating nose w/ sweet licorice, berries, and rose pedals. The palate is not yet as expressive as the nose. But great texture, round in the mouth feel, firm tannins. this will be one to grab on release.
A beautiful dark red colored wine. Wonderful blackberry flavor with a bit of red licorice. Strong yet smooth tannins, a hint of tobbaco and a lovely, long finish.
Earthy nose coffee, blackberry. On the palate coffee, brown sugar, black fruit, occasional gamey quality, long finsh. Far better than the 1995 on every measure; drinking well now and will improve with time. Great stuff; my second favorite of the night
Initially the hints of cassis give this wine a Super Tuscan feel but on the second sip the ripe fruits of the Piedmont soon start pouring forward. Each year this wine becomes more harmonious, a bright, silky wine with a lush texture. The tannins provide a super finish. Simply beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2031. (SN 09/07)

Very good deep red. Multidimensional aromas of raspberry, flowers, mocha, menthol, orange peel, licorice and underbrush, plus a whiff of petrol that reminded me of riesling. Densely packed and powerful but without any undue weight, showing terrific finesse and mouthfilling breadth to its flavors of red fruits, menthol and minerals. Superb inner-mouth tension here. Has the strength of fruit to support the powerful tannins on the unflagging finish. This should gain in complexity in bottle for two or three decades.

Dark red fruit, savory herbs, menthol, tobacco and smoke are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2010 Sperss. A wine of unusual translucency and nuance, in 2010 Sperss is supremely refined and less bombastic than is often the case. The 2010 shuts down quickly in the glass and its best days lie many, many years ahead. Today, though, I am quite struck by what appears to be a subtle yet noticeable change in direction at Gaja.

The 2010 Sperss delivers a broad approach to the bouquet with bold flavors of red fruit, spice and milk chocolate that caress the palate. The wine sports a broad frame with beautiful fruit filling at its core. The tannins in Sperss are very firm and structured and this wine won’t be ready for five to ten more years. Drink: 2018–2040.

Fragrant, with incense and sandalwood notes framing the core of cherry, accented by hints of leather, tobacco and tea. Exhibits purity and density despite the formidable tannins. The finish is long and complex, revealing fruit and spice elements. Best from 2018 through 2035.
