The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Tasting Notes:The 1998 Barbaresco is a beautiful effort displaying fleshy, oaky, deep black cherry, raspberry, tar, and truffle scents with subtle new oak in the background. Dense, voluptuously-textured, and full-bodied, with gorgeous overall

Phenomenal aromas of crushed berries, strawberries, blackberries and minerals. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Just the right amount of wood and fruit. Best after 2006. 2,800 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from Piedmont in Italy. 1998 Gaja Langhe Sperss 750ml

Wine Spectator ReviewLoads of cherry, raspberry and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, with soft, well-knit tannins and a long, long finish. A modern and delicious Barbaresco. Best after 2003.

Fantastic, promising nose of tar, licorice, minerals, and toasted oak. This mid-weight wine is fairly soft, but is also totally shut down and inexpressive on the palate today and seems to be at an awkward stage in its development. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Deep ruby to the rim. Subtly complex, sharply defined aromas of black raspberry, violet, camphor, tar and vanilla. Quite closed in the mouth, but already hints at great sweetness and depth. Excellent harmonious acidity clarifies and extends the flavo... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 1998 Gaja, Angelo Sperss 750ml
