Editorial Reviews for Gaja Winery Sperss Barbera Nebbiolo Piedmonte Langhe
Not surprisingly this has a rather assertive oaken sheen on the nose with a smoky, pickle barrel character. Under the wood there are fine notes of leathery, strongly floral fruit that verges into the almost Cabernet Franc-like vegetal zone. Airing helps moderate the wood and notes of thyme; wild black berry, subtle funghi and minerals emerge slowly. In the mouth there is big black cherry fruit supported by good acidity and tons of polished tannins yielding a rather slick mouth feel. The end result is a shiny, friendly wine that is big and simple with a bit of heat and toughness to the tannins obvious on the finish. This could very well improve with further cellaring but doesn’t seem to be going my way – 87pts
Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above.Minty and grassy on the nose with a bit of wood still showing and a curious combination of fresh fruit and evolved soy and dried mushroom tones. There are cocoa and truffle hints to the fruit, which has a bit of bitterness to it as well as aromas that recall Cabernet Franc. At first this is elegant in the mouth then dry, woody tannins take hold and give this a hard, short feel. The flavors are tending to the evolved end of the spectrum, with sweet toasted oak and dark cherry fruit trying to balance the soy and earth tones. Overall this is rather lightweight on the palate with the texture dominated by the off-puttingly dry tannins. 86pts
Just tried Gaja's Barbaresco 2008, and what a lovely drink! Clear, intense ruby colour. Clean youthful aromas of red cherry, wild strawberries, sweet spice, licorice and young oak shavings. Dry, full-bodied Nebbiolo with abundance of grippy tannins and plenty of fresh acidity. As with all Nebbiolos, they are very restrained in their youth and need some time to showcase their fullest characteristics. Medium+ intensity of ripe cherry and dark berry fruit flavours with a dash of spice on the finish. Drink 2015 - 2025. 93/100.
A mid ruby red in the glass with a nose that needed some coaxing. Tight. When it comes forward the aromas of blackberries, strawberries and light rose are there in typical style. Full bodied and mouth coating, good firm tannins and a long finish. Luscious mid palate, lots of fruit, well balanced, opulent and structured. 93 Points
This barbaresco was young when we drank it but it lived up to the Gaja name as usual. I can see where more aging would greatly enhance this ruby red. It had medium body with berry, licorice and spicy notes. Good tannins and a long finish. http://www.deepredcellar.com
[Gaja Winery] Captivating nose w/ sweet licorice, berries, and rose pedals. The palate is not yet as expressive as the nose. But great texture, round in the mouth feel, firm tannins. this will be one to grab on release.
A beautiful dark red colored wine. Wonderful blackberry flavor with a bit of red licorice. Strong yet smooth tannins, a hint of tobbaco and a lovely, long finish.
Earthy nose coffee, blackberry. On the palate coffee, brown sugar, black fruit, occasional gamey quality, long finsh. Far better than the 1995 on every measure; drinking well now and will improve with time. Great stuff; my second favorite of the night
Initially the hints of cassis give this wine a Super Tuscan feel but on the second sip the ripe fruits of the Piedmont soon start pouring forward. Each year this wine becomes more harmonious, a bright, silky wine with a lush texture. The tannins provide a super finish. Simply beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2031. (SN 09/07)

Dark red fruit savory herbs menthol tobacco and smoke are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2010 Sperss. A wine of unusual translucency and nuance in 2010 Sperss is supremely refined and less bombastic than is often the case. The 2010 shuts down quickly in the glass and its best days lie many many years ahead. Today though I am quite struck by what appears to be a subtle yet noticeable change in direction at Gaja. 95+ Antonio Galloni.
Very good deep red. Multidimensional aromas of raspberry flowers mocha menthol orange peel licorice and underbrush plus a whiff of petrol that reminded me of riesling. Densely packed and powerful but without any undue weight showing terrific finesse and mouthfilling breadth to its flavors of red fruits menthol and minerals. Superb inner-mouth tension here. Has the strength of fruit to support the powerful tannins on the unflagging finish. This should gain in complexity in bottle for
Gaja s 2009 Sperss has developed nicely since I last tasted it a few months ago. An intense bouquet redolent of smoke ash savory herbs and licorice melds into dense blackberry plums and black cherry notes. The pedigree of these great Serralunga sites comes through in spades in a vibrant beautifully exotic Sperss. I expect that the 2009 will drink well early something that is rarely the case. Antonio Galloni.
Some very ripe fruit aromas of dried berries Christmas pudding and some hints of soy sauce and dried meats. Full body chewy and tangy with lots of cedar and hints of lavender. Lively and muscular. More tannic than the Conteisa and needs another three to four years of bottle age to resolve. James Suckling.

Gaja's Sperss was once a Barolo but now occupies a category all its own as a Nebbiolo from the Langhe region-the producer famously declassified his top wines. This shows extreme elegance and sophistication with fine nuances of forest fruit, spice, dr... Wine Enthusiast. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2008 Gaja Sperss 750ml
There s a lot of toasty oak framing the black cherry tobacco and spice flavors in this suave powerful red. Balanced overall with plenty of fruit but needs time to integrate more fully. Displays a fine mix of fruit and spice on the aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2035. -BS Wine Spectator.
