Gaja Sori Tildin 2001

Tight, unremarkable. No detailed notes, but if you own it . . . put it down for a few years and hope for the best. Given the source good things will likely happen.

Deep red-ruby. A bit less exuberant on the nose than the Cos ta Russi, hinting at plum, mocha, chocolate, underbrush and minerals. Very suave on entry, then brooding, classy and young, with far more primary black fruit and licorice flavors than the nose suggests. Less showy today than the Costa Russi but perhaps even longer, with more powerful tannins. This really calls for at least seven or eight years of additional bottle aging.

The word Sorì means a hilltop with a southern exposure. Tildìn was the nickname of Angelo Gaja's grandmother, Clothilde Rey. She was a visionary who was instrumental in acquiring some of the choicest parcels for the Gaja Estate, as well as being the inspiration behind Angelo's continuous quest to innovate. Deep purple. Complex aromas of toast, minerals, sour cherries, cedar and spices. Displays the roundest tasting profile of all Gaja single-vineyard wines. The rich body, subtle texture and fine, ripe tannins are typical for this wine of great finesse, the quintessential read more...expression of the land and the Nebbiolo grape.
