Gaja Nebbiolo Langhe DOC Sorì Tildìn 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2005 Sori Tildin appears to be incredibly primary and youthful. Floral aromatics meld seamlessly into freshly cut roses, raspberries, licorice, tar and menthol. This graceful, feminine wine reveals tons of elegance and finesse in an understated style. Today the Sori Tildin shows a touch more oak than the other single-vineyard wines, which suggests it may not quite have the stuffing of the very finest vintages. Still, this remains a vibrant and very Piedmontese wine in need of only one thing, and that is a long slumber in the cellar...I was blown away by Angelo Gaja’s 2005 wines from Barbaresco. When all is said and done, Gaja may have well produced not the wine, but rather the wines of the vintage...95." WA 11/08

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Red-ruby. Pungent aromas of plum, earth, truffle, minerals and tea. Concentrated and sweet, with a distinctly higher-pitched quality than the Costa Russi; lively acids give the flavors more definition, but the firm tannins are a bit youthfully spiky ... The purity of fruit in this young Nebbiolo is impressive, with a cedar, fresh mushroom and forest undertone. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit as well as toasty oak and milk chocolate. This is a wine that gives you lots at the finish. Best after 2014... Wine Spectator. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2005 Gaja, Angelo Sori Tildin 750ml

Best elements of the Nebbiolos - tastes of ripe strawberries, hints of vanilla and aromas of eucalyptus and roses.
