Wine Spectator Review Rated 96 Offers fabulous aromas of blueberry and lilac. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and round, caressing tannins. This is deep and concentrated, yet wonderfully balanced. Superb. The best Conteisa after 2000. Best after 2010. Wine Tasting Notes Garnet. Expressive floral nose with notes of red berries, plums, licorice and spices. The Nebbiolo in Conteisa reflects the essence of the Cerequio terroir: sumptuous texture and a very refined character with perfectly integrated tannins.

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. 1999 Langhe Conteisa Medium ruby. Gaja s 1999 Conteisa, from the Cerequio cru in La Morra, is the most approachable of this set of wines. It offers a delicate, perfumed nose, along with notes of ripe red fruit, spices and sweet toasted oak with excellent length as well as balance and fine tannins. Here the softer La Morra fruit seems a bit dominated by the oak. 92/drink after 2007, 03/06

Good deep red. Redcurrant, plum, tobacco and smoky oak on the nose. Lush, broad, ripe and quite dry; backward today and not currently showing the complexity or depth of the Sperss. Brooding flavors of licorice and menthol suggest that this wine also

Full red. Crystal lized redcurrant and plum on the nose. Suave on entry, then rather closed in the middle palate, hinting only at licorice and menthol. But this powerfully structured Barolo builds impressively toward the back end. The tannins are substantial but not dry.
