Gaja Ca' Marcanda Magari 2011

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The 2011 Magari IGT is a soft and savory wine that boasts dark extraction and a high degree of aromatic intensity. Lush cherry and blackberry emerge from this blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. You feel a point of alcoholic heat that is in line with the warm 2011 vintage, that extra power folds nicely within the broad texture of the mouthfeel.

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Great violet/barnyard nose, fruity but ephemeral palate. Thanks to Gambino's Wines in O'Fallon, Missouri.

Insanely delicious for $35 tastes like a much more expensive wine, very well structured and a long ride from start to finish, it's barolo like at the end where some chocolate, toboacco and minerally things show up. A luscious ripe fruit nose, the long middle is very fruity

A deep, rich version, with the plum, black cherry, vanilla and toast flavors aligned with a dense texture and refined tannins. Long and harmonious, this should benefit from additional time in the bottle. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2015 through 2022.

Deep garnet with blue tinges. Lush Merlot fruit and spicy Cabernet aromas. Magari showcases the essence of the upper Maremma. It's a full, rich, well-rounded wine with an elegant, silky finish.

From Angelo Gaja's Bolgheri estate, Ca' Marcanda, this Super Tuscan, Magari is the standard bearer. A blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc that's aged in French oak barrels. 2010 was an outstanding vintage and the Wine Advocate scored this 94 points saying "Showing spectacular traits of the vintage, the 2010 Magari (50% Merlot and 25% each Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc) is a dark and modern wine with a thick fabric of dark fruit, blackberry preserves, spice and tobacco woven tightly together. The mouthfeel is exceedingly plush and there’s a sweet oak note of toasted almond or Spanish cedar on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2026."
