G.d. Vajra di Aldo-Langhe Bianco Italy-Piedmont-Langhe Riesling 2009
Aldo Vajra's wines are characterised by pristine flavours and clearly defined perfumes. These characters are attributable to the position of his vineyards which are at about 400 metres above sea level in the village of Vergne, commune of Barolo. This Langhe Bianco is, without the slightest hint of exaggeration, one of Italy’s best and most individual white wines. Made from 100% Riesling, this is pale lemon in colour with youthful green hints. The wine has a lovely balance of fruit and freshness. On the nose it is beginning to show an attractive, minerally character, offset by perfumes of ripe, summer fruit. On the palate it is dry and clean, with the characteristic steely, mineral notes typical of good Riesling on the palate and a lemon/lime note cutting through the ripe, apricot fruit. Long and elegant on the finish, it has great ageing potential.
RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
A constantly evolving Riesling, unthought of before Vajra experimented and planted this variety in Barolo. Truly an innovative success!
I've got another bottle of this that I'm waiting on, but I couldn't resist opening this one. Delicious - bright, fresh citrus notes up front, and stone fruit, like apricot, on the mid-palate. A refreshing finish. This wine offers a lot now, but will certainly get better, and is a compelling example of Riesling coming out of the Piedmont. A unique, undeniably delicious wine, for sure, and one that got better every day it was open. By day 3, the bottle was (of course) gone.
