What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

WA 95+ (12/2007): The 2005, which is again a wine dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, has a dense purple color, gorgeous structure, good acidity, but full-bodied power, a layered mouthfeel, and sweet oak (mostly Taransaud) that integrates beautifully into the black currant and blackberry fruit intermixed with espresso, licorice, and spice. This is another beauty, slightly more restrained and less flamboyant compared to 2004, but built for the long haul. This wine should age for 20-25 years.

First I've never had the wine, so read on knowing that. Futo is the former Oakford estate. At its last vintage 2001 Oakford reatailed for 85/bottle which in my mind is too much for any Cal cab, regardless of marketing back story. What then could the new owners have dune that would possible make a bottle of wine worth 300+ dollars?

Oakford was a beautifully made Napa cab, I'm reasonably sure Futo is to, but oye the price.

IWC 93 (6/2008): Good medium ruby. Hugely ripe aromas of sappy black raspberry, black cherry, mocha and smoke, with a whiff of maple syrup. Lush, sweet and seductive; a wine of outstanding fullness if not quite the complexity of the 2006, which has the advantage of some cabernet franc. The tannins are remarkably lush, broad and sweet. This was aged in 100% new Taransaud barriques, vs. 90% for the '05.
