Fromm Winery la Strada Pinot Noir Marlborough la Strada 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Staying true to the roots of our European founder Georg Fromm, Fromm Winery strive to make wines that reflect the vineyards in which the vines are grown. The main Fromm vineyards are located just South of the Wairau River in Marlborough and since 1992 they have quietly developed a reputation for crafting distinctive single vineyard wines that illustrate their integrity, their terroir and their character. Fromm are dedicated to producing intense, concentrated wines. All Fromm wines have an uncompromising emphasis on texture and drinkability. They carefully regulate crop size, follow organic principles and are committed to sustainable viticulture. There are two ranges at Fromm - the Fromm Vineyards and La Strada. The emphasis of the La Strada range is more on style rather than terroir as seen in the Fromm range. It is in this range where William Hoare’s influence is most visible, adding a New World touch to the traditional 'Fromm signature'. This range consists of four premium wines including chardonnay, pinot noir, syrah and rosé, all ready for drinking upon release. Fromm's passion for Pinot Noir is reflected in the attention to detail shown in the vineyard and throughout the winemaking process. Carefully selected clones, rootstock, together with Intensive vineyard care and low cropping allow the vines to produce fruit that illustrates the terroir in which they were grown. One of the aspects of Pinot Noir that make the variety so intriguing is the way that the variety changes depending on the terroir in which it is grown. At Fromm we embrace this aspect by producing three terroir-driven wines - Fromm Vineyard, Clayvin Vineyard and Brancott Valley. The La Strada Pinot Noir is a blend from the three vineyards, showing layers of ripe, dense fruit with a nice floral fragrance and slight earthy terroir note. Now with some bottle age, the wine has matured into an excellent food wine, supple and savoury with fine tannins and a rewarding round finish.

We had this at a highly regarded fine dining restaurant in DC. I chose a pinot noir based on the different types of food our group was having. It did not disappoint. The sweet aroma of blackberries, floral notes almost made the bottle worth it. A couple of sips revealed the soft, smooth, fruity notes of black fruit and vanilla. It was the perfect bottle for the evening. Even non-wine enthusiasts loved it.
