Delightful balance between Riesling and Chardonnay, refreshing acidity and light fruit.

This is a fun wine that I feel should be consumed while it is young. My wife and I bought it at the winery and drank it with spicy asian cuisine. The nose was somewhat subdued, but that may have been becuase the wine was chilled which can lower the level of compounds we can pick up with our noses. The wine was clear and light gold in color with very good clarity. The taste was clean with light hints of dry fruit and some mineral notes. All of the tasters noted how the wine went well with the food we were eating at the time.

A Brief History: A part of our family since 1990, Merlot holds a special place in the heart of Frog's Leap as the majority of the fruit comes from the Estate surrounding our winery and historic Red Barn. Situated in the eastern part of Rutherford this vineyard is perfectly suited for growing Merlot due to its rich, clay loam soils. We have found over the years that Merlot likes "cool feet" and a "warm body." The clay soils hold more moisture keeping the root-zone cool, while the setting sun over the Mayacamas gives our vines an extra hour of evening sun. Sustainable and dry farming practices reveal the true personality of the varietal, which we describe as having red fruit flavors with a soft, supple texture. We believe that our Merlot is another great ambassador of the Frog's Leap style — elegant, balanced and restrained. About the Wine: There are some years when Merlot is delightful and complete on its own and there are other years that the wine is simply more balanced and powerful with the aid of either or both of its cousins: Cabernet sauvignon or Cabernet franc. You can imagine the lively discussions amongst the winemaking team each year as we confront the possibilities of our new vintage of Merlot. The goal is simple: preserve the intense and beautiful red fruit character of Merlot while building the structure of the wine with Cabernet sauvignon or Cabernet franc. In particularly fine years the Merlot’s fruit aromas are intense enough to allow substantial additions of a Cabernet cousin which will deepen the flavors and add significantly to its age-worthiness. Such is the 2015 Merlot which gladly accepted nearly 20% of our best Cabernet sauvignon. With its beautiful dark raspberry aromas and silken yet powerful flavors, this without question is a wine for the cellar. And with a few years of age, this wine will beg for a well-seasoned pork roast on a bed of fall root vegetables. The Blend: 81% Merlot 19% Cabernet Sauvignon Aged: 19 months in French and American oak Alcohol: 13.2% TA: 5.7 g/L pH: 3.55

About the Wine: We at the winery have been absolutely enthralled by all the wines we have produced from the 2013 vintage—the reds in particular and this beautiful Merlot is no exception. The depth of the ripe plum aromas is astounding, the weight on the palate perfect and the flavors go on and on. We were surprised somewhat in our blending trials when we consistently preferred this wine with a small portion of Cabernet sauvignon and a dollop of Cabernet franc blended in. The added structure promises complete integrity for aging well into the future. If you are opening it in its first five years of life, I would recommend an hour or more decanting and serving it with a dish slightly sweeter in its preparation—Duck a l‘Orange, perhaps? With a few years of age it will, I am convinced, prove worthy of the most classically prepared cuisine. The Blend: 82% Merlot 17% Cabernet sauvignon 1% Cabernet franc Aged: 18 months in French and American oak Alcohol: 13.4% Total Acidity: 6.1 g/L pH: 3.57

About the Wine: After the challenging vintage of 2011, you can imagine our relief when it became obvious to us that 2012 was going to be one of the most glorious vintages in decades. “Back to Pomerol” was my first thought and “back to 100% Merlot” was my first decision. Here in Rutherford we have found that coaxing out the ripe, purple-plum aromas and soft, succulent flavors of Merlot is best achieved when the grape is left to stand on its own. The 2012 demonstrates everything one can ask for from a classic Merlot. Pretty, red-fruited aromas and flavors with the trademark touches of damp earth and sage. This wine also has that defining Merlot mouthfeel, one that balances tenderness and authority making this the perfect candidate for either tonight’s dinner of roasted chicken or a decade of sleeping in the cellar. - Winery Aged: 18 months in French and American oak Alcohol: 13.2% TA: 5.9 g/L pH: 3.63
