Frog's Leap is one of the best-known wineries from the West Coast. Their Merlot is laden with currant, black cherries, and toasted-nutty flavors, and pairs perfectly with rosemary-roasted lamb.

Full-throttle Merlot here, oaky, tannic and dry. It's a young wine now, somewhat sharp and edgy, but with a promising future. The cherry flavors should sweeten and the tannins soften with three or four years of proper cellaring.

There's an ashy, sage and thyme edge to this ripe young Merlot that actually adds interest to the cherry, blackberry and cranberry aromas and flavors. The wine is voluptuously rich, almost decadent, so ripe is the fruit and so fine are the tannins, but it never loses its dry sense of balance. Very Bordeaux-like in elegance.

The aroma reminded us of plums, juicy, bright fruit and smoked ham, with notes of garlic and several spices, including clove. It had a lush texture that "makes you want to take another sip," one of our tasters said. Easy drinking and well balanced.

The deep cherry-plum scent leads into a plush-textured bath of red cherry fruit. For all its richness and concentration, this manages to stay fresh, finishing both brash and lithe. Suited to anything from a grilled pork chop to a grilled lamb chop.

Ripe, firm and focused, with a red currant and cherry core. Lingers on the finish, picking up spicy toasted oak notes. Tannins are firm but well integrated. Drink now through 2005.

Ruby-red. Plum, red currant, cedar, tobacco, loam and a lightly vegetal quality on the nose. Supple and sweet, with flavors similar to the aromas. A somewhat undifferentiated, simple wine but one with adequate acidity and good balance. Finishes with rather smooth tannins.

Winemaker's Notes:

"Merlot holds a special place in the heart of Frog’s Leap as the majority of the fruit comes from the Estate surrounding the winery and historic Red Barn. Situated in the eastern part of Rutherford this vineyard is perfectly suited for growing Merlot due to its rich, clay loam soils." --adopted from winery website
