External Reviews for Frogs Leap Merlot
The 2005 Frog’s Leap Merlot is predominantly grown in these soils in the shadow of the Red Barn, yielding a wine of intensity and structure that needs no blending partner. With a dark garnet color, this wine’s varietal character is revealed by its classic aromas of cherry blueberry and sage. Across the palate the wine’s soft and plush texture is full of fruit flavors — ripe plums and red berries with underlying notes of cigar box and green tea that leads to a supple mouthfeel and persistent finish, all supported by polished tannins.
Full-throttle Merlot here, oaky, tannic and dry. It's a young wine now, somewhat sharp and edgy, but with a promising future. The cherry flavors should sweeten and the tannins soften with three or four years of proper cellaring.
Frog's Leap is one of the best-known wineries from the West Coast. Their Merlot is laden with currant, black cherries, and toasted-nutty flavors, and pairs perfectly with rosemary-roasted lamb.
Ripe and complex, with high-toned cola, blackberry, cranberry and wild berry flavors that are elegant and refined, finishing with good length and ripe, integrated tannins. Drink now through 2008.
The aroma reminded us of plums, juicy, bright fruit and smoked ham, with notes of garlic and several spices, including clove. It had a lush texture that "makes you want to take another sip," one of our tasters said. Easy drinking and well balanced.
There's an ashy, sage and thyme edge to this ripe young Merlot that actually adds interest to the cherry, blackberry and cranberry aromas and flavors. The wine is voluptuously rich, almost decadent, so ripe is the fruit and so fine are the tannins, but it never loses its dry sense of balance. Very Bordeaux-like in elegance.
Tightly wound and well-focused, with spicy blackberry, leather, anise, mocha and mineral flavors, finishing with a rich aftertaste and firm, integrated tannins. Drink now through 2009.
