Frescobaldi Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rufina 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells fairly intense with dusty mineral notes, oak notes and leafy edged black currant fruit on the nose, all over dark, leather-dried strawberry fruit. Tight and focused in the mouth and fairly rich up front with nice, slightly vanilla-edged dark berry and dried strawberry fruit. This is rather smooth though there is a base of fine tannin. Some woody tannin emerging on the back end is balanced by soft if lively acids. A touch extracted on the finish, showing an odd blend of sweet, ripe black cherry and grapey fruit and drying, firm tannins, though the fruit manages to stick around for a while. This is a touch rough around the edges. 88pts

This starts off with noticeable chocolate oak on the nose and then has lots of cherry cordial, wood spice and some rose petal. This is very smooth and soft in the mouth. There are very attractive flavors of dark fruit, mineral, leather and toasty spice all wrapped in a gentle wash of cocoa. This will have very broad appeal, it really delivers a fine rendition of Chianti, if rather rich and sleek. The fruit takes on a gritty aspect on the back end then yields to a lovely, austere finish, which sees a bit of wood tannin lingering on the finale. Not exactly my style but lovely. 91pts

Very much a barnyard nose. On the tongue, typical, to me, lightly red-fruited, but, then, noticeable tartness. Medium bodied. Very drinkable, and, for $14, good QPR.

D/H 2013-2020- The 2008 Chianti Rufina Riserva Nipozzano is a very beautiful wine in this vintage. It shows attractive mid-palate juiciness in its sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. This mid-weight, delicate Chianti is best enjoyed over the next few years while the fruit retains its freshness. The Nipozzano is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine spent 24 months in French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. Score: 89. —Antonio Galloni, August 2011. @ryebrook

A soft-spoken Chianti that hides layers of depth. Hints of leather surround the cherry, raspberry, and strawberry notes on the nose. The tannins are quite underspoken, but they finish stronger. The wine is an elegant grower, revealing depth as you sip. It is quite indicative of the milder weather of the 2008 vintage.

Description: Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rufina DOCG is one of the historic wines produced at the Castello Nipozzano. This wine always retains its close relationship with the Castello di Nipozzano terroir. Vintage Report: Winter 2012 was characterised by cold temperatures reaching below zero in January. In February there was abundant snowfall. The cool spring, with rainy episodes well spread over the season, encouraged the replenishment of the soil on the slopes, guaranteeing good water resources for the vineyards, especially during the summer period, when the vegetation was at its peak and the clusters started to darken and ripen. The summer, on the other hand, hot and dry, was characterised by days with record temperatures of over 35°C and a strong temperature range during the night. Tasting Notes: Nipozzano 2012 is ruby coloured with purple reflections. Entry on the nose is floral, clean aromas of sweet violet which prevail over the fruitiness. Then, raspberry, blackcurrant and cherry, accompanied by liquorice scents and spicy notes of Muscat and white pepper. At the end sweet notes of black plum jam and almond candy appear. Entry on the palate is warm and decisive, with tannins readily evident. The texture appears decisive, a typical characteristic of Chianti Rùfina. Long persistence. Aftertaste at the end dominated by floral and spicy notes at the back of the mouth.

This is elegant, with perfumed aromas of rose, currant, cherry, licorice and spice. Racy and firm, showing fine harmony and a long, spice- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. A bit austere on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2024.

Aromas of dark-skinned berry, exotic spice and wildflower lead the nose on this concentrated but refined wine. The intense palate offers layers of ripe black cherry, juicy raspberry, licorice, clove and tobacco alongside firm, velvety tannins. It’s a compelling expression of Chianti Rùfina. Drink 2016–2021.

Deep red with garnet colour; aromas of black cherry/blackberry fruit with cedar, smoke and vanilla notes; extra dry, full bodied, with balanced fruit flavours, notes of smoke and tar, good acidity with a touch of spice, licorice and leather; long finish.

Chianti Rufina Riserva is a soft, accessible, fruit-driven Chianti. It offers good length although the intensity drops off a little on the mid-palate. Ideally there might be a little more Sangiovese character.

Black cherry, spice, tobacco and earth flavors prevail in this dense red. The tannins verge on being gritty in texture, yet there's adequate acidity to keep this fresh. Best from 2016 through 2024.

General Information: Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rufina DOCG is one of the historic wines produced at the Castello di Nipozzano. This wine always retains its close relationship with the Castello di Nipozzano terroir. Vintage Report: Spring 2010 was marked by frequent rainstorms, which made life difficult for the viticulturalists with regard to vineyard operations and anti-fungal efforts, but the rain also had the benefit of building up groundwater reserves. The summer months experienced a rather even alternation of decent rains and sunny days. September brought ideal conditions, with cool nights and warm, sunny days right through to the end of the harvest. The upshot was that the vines performed splendidly, and the fruit arrived in the cellar with optimal ripeness levels. At Castello di Nipozzano, the weather conditions, even and balanced throughout the season, will produce wines of remarkable elegance, bright acidity, and emphatic aromatics, with superb complexity and cellaring potential. After the spring rains, the summer months were marked by mild, sunny conditions that lasted into autumn. September brought some rain, but it did no harm to the health and soundness of the fruit. The fine ripeness levels of the grapes will ensure remarkably fine structures for this year’s wines. ESTATE AND VINEYARD LOCATION: Chianti Rùfina area where is located Castello di Nipozzano ALTITUDE: 250-500 m VINEYARD SIZE: 250 ha EXPOSURE: Various SOIL TYPE: Calcareous clay, rich in stone PLANTING DENSITY: From 2,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare TRAINING SYSTEM: Spur - pruned cordon and guyot
