Frescobaldi Mormoreto 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

High toned and herbal at first then adding cassis, leather and a touch of mushroom. Turns a bit fruitier with a plum/blackberry character and a minty top note but this also seems to be a bit bretty. Very smooth and polished in the mouth and the austere tannins really pile up. It's minty and vanilla toned on the finish with more of those tough tannins. There is a core of currant fruit and this feels packed with fruit as well but the wine simply has too much tannin. I don't know when to drink this, sooner with a rich, fatty steak would be my advise since I can't see the fruit outlasting the tannins. 86pts

Beautiful dark red, reddish-purple on the meniscus, impressive spicy nose, anticipating a strong body and rich complexity. Round on the palate, yet medium bodied, velvety and well-balanced. Intensely fruity attack (red berries, cherries, sweet plums, cinnamon and a hint of peach), good balance of sugars and medium ripe tannins, pleasant aftertaste (raisins, dates, oak, vanilla and tobacco), a rather disappointing finish, way too short for the overall promise of this class of Supertuscans.

Dusted off this bottle when I was at my favorite local cellar and was curious about a frescobaldi cab. Opened the bottle up before starting my grill for the 4th of July to breathe a little. Didn't take a taste right after opening so I can't compare to when I did drink. Plowed through a few spiced BBQ baby back ribs before remembering this little bottle of joy waiting for me. Having started drinking wine in Italy only, when I went back to the states I found modern cabernet just offensive. Flavors are so drastic and the wine is bottled before the everything can really mellow and blend. This however, was completly different from anything I've had so far. Even though I had a mouthful of ribs black currant and suttle pepper just gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. Tapered off at the end with a little less after taste and fruit. There was a good amount of sediment so leave about a glass remaining in the bottle to avoid it. Great wine and went well with some bbq.

Big, soft and rich. Loads of crushed berry, blackberry and cherry aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate with soft tannins and a light dried herb finish.

An extraordinary wine - solid and grand with its black purple opaqueness in the glass. An abashed nose of fresh plum tart with candied violets, black pepper, black licorice and rich plum/cherry confit. Resolute grip and a dense core are linked by a vibrant acidity, while the side notes are ones of tobacco and cedar. Chewy, thick and tight-knit at this point, but its powerful structure will mature admirably.
