This starts off with noticeable chocolate oak on the nose and then has lots of cherry cordial, wood spice and some rose petal. This is very smooth and soft in the mouth. There are very attractive flavors of dark fruit, mineral, leather and toasty spice all wrapped in a gentle wash of cocoa. This will have very broad appeal, it really delivers a fine rendition of Chianti, if rather rich and sleek. The fruit takes on a gritty aspect on the back end then yields to a lovely, austere finish, which sees a bit of wood tannin lingering on the finale. Not exactly my style but lovely. 91pts

Tonight's selection was a nice Chianti Rufina from an estate that traces its roots back to the 11th century, Castello di Nipozzano. Not to be confused with the standard Chianti Classico, the Chianti Rufina comes from the furthest corner of the Chianti DOCG, perched almost as a separate addition to the northeast corner of the Chianti region, just to the east of Florence. Blessed with a distinct soil and climate from the broader region, along with long, warm and dry summers creates a distinctive taste to this wine. Given this background, it's not surprising that this wine exhibits much different characteristics than its dry Sangiovese cousins. With a rich ruby color, the wine exhibits a nose of earth, leather and spicy oak, offering a preview of its structured tannins, coupled with a hint of black cherry suggesting an interesting balance in taste. The wine has wonderful flavors of rich fruit, with rich berries, with with a tangy zest of acidity that offers an amazing balance. This one can really get you going, thinking it's going to be a sweet fruity wine, but then in the end it snaps you back in a completely different direction! As for food pairings, this would go wonderfully with a classic zuppa Toscana, or the classic fagioli beans on Tuscan toast, and especially a wonderfully grilled steak, a favorite throughout Tuscany! Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 3.5, only because it's a bit on the expensive side at $17, but still a wondefuly wine to end the day!

Lots of blueberry, soft with low tannins and moderate acid, good food wine.

Very nice, really best enjoyed with grilled meats. I didn't enjoy sipping on it's own.

One of the first wine's I really loved and got me interested in Italian wines. Robust, strong finish, with just the right hint of fruity.

A deep, purple-edged ruby red, of impressive brilliance. Solid fruit notes of wild blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and dark cherry emerge initially on the nose, gradually yielding to more pungent impressions of sage, rosemary, vanilla, and cinnamon. That spiciness segues onto the palate, and then into a finish that ends with a flourish of balsam, black pepper, and cocoa powder. The mid-palate shows alcoholic warmth and roundedness, while the tannins and acidity are noticeable, adding to the wine's overall harmony.
