What to Expect

Chianti is a large region that produces a wide range of styles. From the basic Chianti to the finest Chianti Classico Riservas, some elements of the wines remain consistent. The wines are based on the Sangiovese grape, which typically yields a medium-bodied wine with strawberry and cherry fruits that are accented with delicate notes of green herb, dusty soil, leather and spice. While Chianti can be produced exclusively from Sangiovese, the vast majority of Chianti is blended with a small percentage of other grapes. Traditional grapes like Mammolo, Colorino, and Canaiolo were used to add some flesh and aromatic complexity to the finished wine but always played second fiddle to Sangiovese. Many producers now include some Merlot, adding fruit and richness, or Cabernet Sauvignon, which contributes power and dark fruit flavors, to their Chianti yielding a wine that is richer and chunkier than the wines of the past.

Editorial Reviews

Clean and fresh on the nose with good Sangiovese fruits and a lovely bloody/mineral feral edge. there is a touch of background sweetness from the wood but the rare beef, clay and iron tones really adds freshness and frames the fruit. Bright and fairly tannic in the mouth this offer a clean, slightly plummy palate impression that speaks of the majority Cabernet in the blend but the finish is cut short by the tannins. Nicely balanced and with the juicy acidity all this needs is 12-18 months for the tannins to come into balance and then this should be a solid bottle. 2010-2017 88pts

A blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. A lovely purple in appearance, luminous and clear. The nose shows a striking expression, with appealing, prominent fruit, in particular dark cherry, subtly softened by a touch of spice.Succulent pulp and a light touch of tannin enliven the palate, complemented by a judicious balance of alcohol and crisp acidity; the finish is impressive and luscious.

Wine Tasting NotesChianti Castiglioni greets the eye with a forward, purple-flecked ruby red. The nose opens to clean aromas of black cherry over nuances of dried plum and spicy, sage-like herbs. The palate is remarkable for its balance, showing abundant but well-integrated tannins, a tasty acidity, and a finish in harmony with all its components.
