Freie Weingärtner Wachau Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Kellerberg 1995

Editorial Review:

Very aromatic, with a lovely array of fresh citrus fruit, earthy apples, and floral and spice aromas over a fine base of dusty minerals. This is a touch spicy in the mouth with a white peppery accent to the herb-inflected ripe apple and lime pith fruit. There's also a mineral edge here that adds nice cut to the mid-palate, which gains weight in the mouth turning fairly powerful and rich, if remaining dry. The back end shows a slight licorice note that tops the modest green apple and peach-toned finish. Firm, well balanced and complex, this lacks a little verve in the mouth and shows a touch of heaviness. 87pts

Domäne Wachau is one of Austria’s most established, yet most innovative wineries. The new team that was put in charge five years ago is headed by Roman Horvath, Austria’s second Master of Wine and Heinz Frischengruber, a young enologist with impressive international experience. In the capable hands of the dynamic team, Domäne Wachau has established itself in the ranks of Austria’s leading wineries. Combining fresh ideas, youthful personality and international experience, the team brings a new energy to the historic winery and makes the future look brighter than ever. Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber are convinced that great wine is not made in the cellar but in the vineyards. Improving the quality of the grapes is the main focus for continued improvement of the wines. To achieve this goal, the cooperative initiated a grading system for their member’s vineyards. Throughout the vegetation period the vineyards are observed and graded according to high standards set by the Domäne Wachau. With patience and respect towards the members, the new team has achieved what many cooperative wineries aim for: the dedication and commitment of the members who, voluntarily, make every effort to supply their winery with the best possible grape material. While the main attention is paid to grape quality, the work in the cellar is reduced to a necessary minimum. “Working with what the Wachau has to give us” is the first priority of oenologist Heinz Frischengruber. His conscientious and gentle handling of the fruit results in a precisely focused style. The Domane Wachau wines showcase the fruit character and mineral finesse that is the unique personality of the Wachau Valley. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

A floral (almost soapy) nose, but fruity on the tongue with a hint of pears and apples.

Slight pear, apple, and petrol on the nose. Medium bodied and quite acidic. Tastes like a Grüner Veltliner masquerading as a riesling, but with none of the white pepper spice. A nice break from the rieslings of Alsace or Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, but not as expressive/explosive as the former, nor as delicate as the latter. Perhaps a different vintage will make for a more characteristic wine.

Lemoney but a little acid. Refreshing but not complex
