Frei Brothers Reserve Zinfandel 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy blackberry and bramble greet the nose along with gentle oak notes of toasted nuts, dried ginger and a bit of nutmeg. Round, soft and transparent in the mouth, this has great Zin character with red cherry and wild raspberry flavors bursting in the mouth. It’s medium-bodied and middle of the road in style, so it’s not going to make many go wow, but it is a classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel with great flavors and balance. This really does have some great aromatics, though the finish is a bit on the short side. Still, this is an easy to drink, easy to like Zinfandel. 87pts

Frei Brothers Reserve was established in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley by Swiss immigrant Andrew Frei. In operation since 1890, Frei Ranch and the winery have played an integral part in establishing the region’s premier reputation for winemaking and continue to produce exceptional wines today by carrying on the rich legacy of both their home vineyard and Sonoma’s celebrated growing regions. Frei Brothers Reserve begins by growing the best grapes in the best growing regions and ends with award-winning wines. Frei Brothers Reserve also believes in better choices and better wine–today and for generations to come. Led by chief viticulturist Jim Collins, the wines are a pure expression of the land, made from premium grapes carefully grown in some of the best wine-growing regions in Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The winery crafts six critically acclaimed wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. Making better choices is also a part of the Frei Brothers Reserves sustainability journey that seeks to preserve natural resources without compromising the quality of the wine. The winery’s efforts have been certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and include some of the following programs: • For every acre of land planted in vineyard, Frei Brothers Reserve sets aside one acre to be preserved as natural habitat • When the winery at Frei Ranch needed to expand, the brand chose to transplant a row of 20 redwood trees rather than cut them down • Frei Brothers Reserve uses fewer harsh chemicals, creating less pollution and reducing energy output • The winery treats and reuses 80 percent of its wastewater for activities like irrigation and frost protection • When replanting, the winery chips old vines for use as compost instead of burning them For more information, visit Frei Brothers Reserve on Facebook at Facebook.com/FreiBrothersReserve Read less

Dark purple color with a nose of raspberry, seabreeze and a touch of baking powder when first opened. The palate is really sweet with loads of red/black berry and cherry with a similar finish. With air the nose really rounds showing a creamy red berry and spice character with the palate being dominated by black cherry with a long sweet finish.

Peppery nose, strong fruit presence on the palate which balances nicely w/ the spices. Very easy to drink

Warm berry tart on the nose. Spice-laced red berry fruit with bramble and some plummy notes. Flavors of dark red and black berry fruit with baking spices. Finishes on a tart cranberry note.

Dark purple in the glass, nose of cherry and berry fruits. Flavors of the same with some earthiness. Very nice wine to drink.

Eye's: Very dark brick in color with a pinkish ring. Nose: I did not get much of a boquete but I did pick up on some nice violet notes. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with really nice tannins. I'm actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it's fruitiness. I really liked this wine. I believe chilling this wine a little would make it a great companion for asian fair.

Dried red cherries, tobacco, smoke and savory herbs are some of the many notes that burst from the glass in the 2011 Zinfandel. I would prefer to enjoy this hearty, generous red over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant and juicy. Here, too, Frei Brothers delivers excellent quality for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2016.

Zesty and easygoing, with appealing raspberry, mineral and spicy herb flavors. Drink now through 2017.

The outstanding 2010 Zinfandel, a blend of 97.5% Zinfandel and 2.5% Petite Sirah (one of Gallo’s favorite blending varietals), hit nearly 15% alcohol. Its dense purple color is accompanied by meaty boysenberry, black cherry and black currant fruit intertwined with notions of pepper and underbrush. Full-bodied with admirable texture as well as fruit, it should drink nicely for 3–4 years.

There are lots of lusty flavors of briary wild berries, currants, sweet cured tobacco and peppery spices in this dry Zinfandel. It has smooth tannins and brisk acidity; by itself, it’s rustic, but richly sauced meats should help tame it.
