Frei Brothers Merlot 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Oak spice and violet floral tones frame a core of milk chocolate laced jammy blackberry fruit on the nose. Round and a bit simple in the mouth, this delivers a rich, smooth mouthful of slightly earthy, dusty blackberry fruit with some nuanced herbal black currant flavors emerging with air. In a fruit driven style, this does a fine job of offering plenty of fruit driven flavors in a classically structured wine with soft acids and polished tannins lending support right through the modest, toasty finish. 87pts

Frei Brothers Reserve was established in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley by Swiss immigrant Andrew Frei. In operation since 1890, Frei Ranch and the winery have played an integral part in establishing the region’s premier reputation for winemaking and continue to produce exceptional wines today by carrying on the rich legacy of both their home vineyard and Sonoma’s celebrated growing regions. Frei Brothers Reserve begins by growing the best grapes in the best growing regions and ends with award-winning wines. Frei Brothers Reserve also believes in better choices and better wine–today and for generations to come. Led by chief viticulturist Jim Collins, the wines are a pure expression of the land, made from premium grapes carefully grown in some of the best wine-growing regions in Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The winery crafts six critically acclaimed wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. Making better choices is also a part of the Frei Brothers Reserves sustainability journey that seeks to preserve natural resources without compromising the quality of the wine. The winery’s efforts have been certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and include some of the following programs: • For every acre of land planted in vineyard, Frei Brothers Reserve sets aside one acre to be preserved as natural habitat • When the winery at Frei Ranch needed to expand, the brand chose to transplant a row of 20 redwood trees rather than cut them down • Frei Brothers Reserve uses fewer harsh chemicals, creating less pollution and reducing energy output • The winery treats and reuses 80 percent of its wastewater for activities like irrigation and frost protection • When replanting, the winery chips old vines for use as compost instead of burning them For more information, visit Frei Brothers Reserve on Facebook at Facebook.com/FreiBrothersReserve Read less

Sweet woods tones, a touch herbal and earthy though with a strong coffee/mocha element and smoked meat notes. This is attractively silky in the mouth with fine, slightly granular tannins that give this a bit of textural detail. The flavors are a bit on the oaky side with a touch of caramel to the coffee tinged dark plum fruits. It’s pretty much textbook Merlot, nothing out of place though it finishes a bit short it’s made in a crowd pleasing style. 86pts

Bit of smoky sweet bbq on the tongue, blueberries and cherries, well balanced flavor with enough acidity and tannins to hold it, and still be fairly silky.

Maple syrup and cherry aromas. Nice blackberry flavors, good texture with a good bit of acidity. Clean wine, with a nice long chocolate finish.

aromas of blackberries, plums and little dark cherry and some underlying softer currants, nice tannic structure balanced with the varying degrees of dark fruit, a little spice as well.

Loud ripe cherries on the nose. Super ripe bright fruit with silky tanins but a slight bitter chemical aftertaste I can't pin down. Very enjoyable though.

Medium bodied Merlot with silky-soft tannins. A second label for Gallo Sonoma, Frei Brothers is intended for folks who pick up wine at the grocery and take it home for dinner that night. But somethi

Frei has done a very nice job with their 2007 Merlot, an opulent example revealing notions of plums, black cherries, mocha, and coffee beans. With delicious fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a heady finish, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Petite Sirah and Zinfandel should drink well for 4ndash;5 years. It is an excellent value.

Somebody picked early, to judge from the slightly green, peppercorn notes. But in a way that adds to the complexity, and makes the wine different. Itrsquo;s not a fruit bomb, itrsquo;s a coffee, herb and blackberry-flavored dry Merlot with structural integrity.

Pretty nice Merlot, dry and smooth. Therersquo;s a little green vegetalness going on, as if the vines were overcropped, but therersquo;s enough cherry fruit to satisfy.

A graceful style thatrsquo;s rich and concentrated, with a broad swath of currant, fresh sage, chocolate and black cherry flavors. Firm, herbal tannins and smoky, toasty oak carry through the finish. Drink now through 2007.

Firm, with rich dried berry, sage and plum flavors, wrapped within herbal tannins. Holds its focus on a long, complex finish. Drink now through 2006.

Nicely focused and structured, with appealing black currant and mineral aromas and complex plum, anise and cedar flavors that finish with firm tannins. Drink now through 2016.
