Editorial Reviews for Frei Brothers Chardonnay Russian River Valley Reserve
A bit subdued on the nose with a nice core of pineapple and lime zest fruit overlaid with spicy, sweet, slightly marshmallowy oak. A bit soft on entry, then this turns fairly firm in the mouth with a nice spine of acid lending freshness to apple and almost peachy fruit that is wrapped in caramel and creme brulee accents. there’s a hint of creaminess that emerges on the backend along with a mineral note and some grilled pineapple flavors. That creamy note takes over on the finish, along with a touch of tannins, giving this power and drive on the moderately long finish. A bit big and obvious but well done in the style. Hopefully the wood integrates a bit over the coming year. 87pts
Four and a half glasses
On first taste, this wine was pleasant but fairly unremarkable. We drank it first with a salad course (basic green salad with vinaigrette), and it was not a great pairing. We drank a second glass with a rich roast chicken and it was fantastic - it unearthed the richer flavors claimed on the bottle. With the salad alone, only the green apple notes seemed strong. Price: David bought it on sale, around $12
