Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Alexander Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Creamy dark chocolate and vanilla extract aromas, oaky and full aromas with blackberries and black currant preserves. A bit of tartness on the palate to start with a creamy texture throughout, grainy tannins and milk chocolate with blackberry jam towards the finish and a fruity, vanilla palate that finishes with good length and depth. 89 pts

Frei Brothers Reserve was established in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley by Swiss immigrant Andrew Frei. In operation since 1890, Frei Ranch and the winery have played an integral part in establishing the region’s premier reputation for winemaking and continue to produce exceptional wines today by carrying on the rich legacy of both their home vineyard and Sonoma’s celebrated growing regions. Frei Brothers Reserve begins by growing the best grapes in the best growing regions and ends with award-winning wines. Frei Brothers Reserve also believes in better choices and better wine–today and for generations to come. Led by chief viticulturist Jim Collins, the wines are a pure expression of the land, made from premium grapes carefully grown in some of the best wine-growing regions in Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The winery crafts six critically acclaimed wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. Making better choices is also a part of the Frei Brothers Reserves sustainability journey that seeks to preserve natural resources without compromising the quality of the wine. The winery’s efforts have been certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and include some of the following programs: • For every acre of land planted in vineyard, Frei Brothers Reserve sets aside one acre to be preserved as natural habitat • When the winery at Frei Ranch needed to expand, the brand chose to transplant a row of 20 redwood trees rather than cut them down • Frei Brothers Reserve uses fewer harsh chemicals, creating less pollution and reducing energy output • The winery treats and reuses 80 percent of its wastewater for activities like irrigation and frost protection • When replanting, the winery chips old vines for use as compost instead of burning them For more information, visit Frei Brothers Reserve on Facebook at Facebook.com/FreiBrothersReserve Read less

Savory red fruit and earthy notes on the nose. This is soft and creamy in the mouth, but bringing in a tannic backbone that supports the fruit through the mid palate with a tart herbal note and rich strawberry, red currant and red cherry notes leading into a nicely smoky, earthy finish with a pleasant minerality and a cocoa powder and vanilla finish.

A damn fine bottle of wine. Maybe the best I've had from that winery. Plenty of firm, dark berry firm, chewy tannins and a core of cedar, chocolate and spice with good acidty for a puckering mouthwatering finish. Really good for the money. Drink or hold - Paul 91 points

Awesome wine, nice black currant, spicy with ample tannins. This wine has everything that I love in a wine. Vanilla with a touch of smoke at the end. Long finish. This has almost become my favorite Cabernet

Received this wine for Christmas from an old friend. Wonderful Cab. Has just what I like, firm tannins, oaky, vanilla, chocolate, spicy pepper. I'm loving it. Very full bodied and well balanced. Reminds me of a Layer Cake Malbec.

Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon has intense aromas of cassis, dark berries and toasty oak. Firm, velvety tannins complement the flavors of blackberry, raspberry, cedar and tobacco. Subtle hints of vanilla and dark chocolate linger in a long, elegant finish.

We use grapes from the Alexander Valley's hillside vineyards for our Frei Brothers Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, because the unique combination of soil and climate gives the wine unparalleled complexity and flavor concentration.

Another outstanding effort as well as a sleeper of the vintage is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and the rest Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, it possesses a dense ruby/purple color, deep, medium to full-bodied flavors, lots of black currant, underbrush and loamy soil notes intertwined with a hint of oak, and a robust, extroverted, impressive finish. This wine should drink well for at least a decade. Moreover, just under 40,000 cases were produced.

The dark ruby/purple-tinged, medium-bodied 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits classic aromas of spicy oak, black currants, tobacco leaf, and licorice. With light tannins as well as flesh and richness, this well-priced wine is best consumed over the next 7-8 years.

Concentrated and brawny, with chalky, gripping tannins wrapped around blueberry, black currant, earth, herb and plenty of toasty oak flavors. Lingering tannins would benefit from food. Drink now through 2007.
