Food Pairings for Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Merlot
A little hot, with tannins. Red fruited and juicy.
Excellent merlot from California well worth the price. Still young and will cellar well. Complex, medium bodied merlot with strong, young tannins. Beautiful pair with any red meat. Slight red fruit notes to the aroma and palate with a long, untamed finish. I will try to but more of this to save.
Nose of bing cherry, plums and some dark chocolate. Palate follows suit with some cinnamon tones. Nice. Smooth, well balanced and rich in the mouth. - Tasted at winery 4/18/10

External Reviews for Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Merlot
An incredibly versatile wine, with a palate filled with bright cherry fruit and fresh Santa Rosa plum. A beautiful balance of acidity and fruit.
WE 94pts. (Cellar Selection) - The Wine Enthusiast gave this glowing review: A very successful vintage for Freemark Abbey's wines overall, and this young, intensely concentrated Merlot is a star of the year. Quite Tannic now, with delineated blackberry, cherry cassis, cola and spice flavors, its best years are ahead. Cellar this impressive wine for 4-6 years. Winemaker Notes - The color is a deep and rich ruby-garnet. With integrated spicy sweet oak, there are layers of flavor composed of black cherry, black currant, plum, mincemeat, juniper berry, mushroom, vanilla and dark chocolate, with an underlining complexity of leather and tobacco. The entry and finish are very smooth with integrated fruit resembling black cherry and a rich dark currant syrup. With an extended length of flavor that is very pleasant, this wine is very inviting .you can't stop with just one glass!
Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. A full complement of ripe cherry fruit with hints of black cherries and dried berries are joined by a light veneer of creamy oak in the nose of this full and slightly fleshy wine. Fairly open in feel and invitingly ready to enjoy over the next few years, the wine relies on bags of youthful energy for balance.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.
