Freemark Abbey Winery:
It began over a century ago as a vision shared by a handful of pioneers; those with an intimate knowledge of grapes and a deep respect for the land. This vision took root, was nurtured by skilled hands and ultimately resulted in one of the first premium wineries in the Napa Valley. Today, the wine of Freemark Abbey stands as a testament to what the rich earth of the Napa Valley is capable of creating when working in perfect harmony with nature.

Fruity and creamy on the nose with subtle underlay of dried herbal notes joining well balanced oak in supporting the core of ripe black currant and black cherry fruit. Nice clarity on entry, this offers a great combination of ripeness and power along with transparency and structure. There are plenty of tannins, with a slight drying edge, and acidity that is present if a bit soft but the flavors are rather pure and fresh, all currant and blackberry toned and playing off the fine use of oak. Finishing fruity and bright as well, with acids that emerge from the blanket of fruit and zesty tannins that cleanse the palate this is awfully well done. It’s also delicious! 92pts

Dusty and a bit sweet on the nose but showing nicely layered green olive, licorice, cedar and black cherry fruit with a hint of dried herbs. A bit diffuse on the palate, but showing a nice balance of integrated acidity and soft tannins that supports the light and lean core of red cherry fruit. This is a touch on the simple side but is drinking well with an attractive mouthfeel. 88pts

The Freemark Abbey was fairly big and jammy with loads of fruit on the front end and a decent amount of oak. Tannins were a little raw yet, believe this bottle could use a few more years. Consumed this with friends and tasted along side a Simi '05 Reserve cab and an '08 St. Francis. The Simi was my favorite by far.

On the nose this shows a generous amount of woodsy spice. Bitter cocoa and hints of under ripe blackberries lead into a zingy palate of ripe raspberries and that generous amount of spice just keeps giving! Not as soft as some cabs, but a nice change!

The backward, Bordeaux-inspired 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder reveals sweet black currant, oak, forest floor and underbrush characteristics. Full-bodied with terrific ripeness and richness as well as a long finish with moderately high tannins, it should be forgotten for 3–4 years and drunk over the following two decades.

Good medium ruby-red, more saturated than the merlot. Attractive floral perfume lifts aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and licorice. Offers darker berries on the palate, along with dark chocolate, pepper and spices and a slightly green herb-and-menthol element. Nice touch of sweetness. Finishes with firm tannic spine and good length.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa shows beautiful cedary, Christmas fruitcake, black currant and black cherry notes as well as excellent ripeness, medium body and a long, spicy, heady finish. Composed of 82.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot and small dollops of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, it should drink well for 10+ years.

This is a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon. It epitomizes the Napa quality of power married to finesse. Winemaker Ted Edwards deserves kudos for producing a high-production Cabernet (34,000 cases) this good, from a difficult vintage. It’s dry and balanced, with rich, complex blackberry, sage and sweet oak flavors. Drink now–2017.

Good bright red-ruby. Cherry, redcurrant and flowers on the nose. Supple on entry, then a bit youthfully clenched in the middle, showing good grip to the flavors of cassis, minerals, licorice and herbs. Not hugely rich or fleshy but has good structure. A tad dry and peppery on the finish. This wine was to have been bottled in April.

The sweet fruitiness and citrus-driven acidity of raspberry and cherry jam mark this savory, young wine. Its pedigree is impressive, ranging from the winery’s historic Bosché Vineyard to Atlas Peak and Mount Veeder. It’s insanely rich, if a little obvious in its appeal, so drink over the next few years.

A powerful, direct wine, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon hits the palate with a blast of dark cherries, plums, violets and spice box. The tannins remain quite firm, so another few years of cellaring is probably a good idea. I very much like the sense of energy and direction, especially on the finish. The 2009 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, from parcels in Stage Coach, Potelle, Veeder Peak, Bosche and Sycamore. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2024.
