Freemark Abbey Chardonnay Napa Valley 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells lovely with a bit of a jolly ranch aspect to the candied lime fruit that greets the nose but it’s joined by aromas of freshly baked bread, spiced apples and even a suggestion of raspberries. Soft in the mouth and a touch of the creamy almond milk side of the spectrum. I expected a bit more lift on the palate, which is well endowed with peachy , pear fruit all underpinned with fine sweet oak notes. Smooth and easy to drink, this does have subtle mineral and citrus pith notes offers some contrast to the sweet oak and fruit flavors, but it still comes off as more to the sweetly fruity side of things and finishes quickly. 89pts

Freemark Abbey Winery:
It began over a century ago as a vision shared by a handful of pioneers; those with an intimate knowledge of grapes and a deep respect for the land. This vision took root, was nurtured by skilled hands and ultimately resulted in one of the first premium wineries in the Napa Valley. Today, the wine of Freemark Abbey stands as a testament to what the rich earth of the Napa Valley is capable of creating when working in perfect harmony with nature.

Very aromatic and fruity on the nose with aromas of pineapple, apricot, mango and lime over a base of hazelnut and honeycomb. This fills the mouth with very well-delineated flavors of apple skins, honeycomb and dried lemon flavors in a style that combines assertive acidity and a gentle roundness. Very much in what is called a Burgundian style, the flavors gain a creamy edge on the back end and the almondy oak builds slightly on the moderately long finish. This really wants some food, but is very well-balanced and fun to drink with complex, well-meshed flavors. 91pts Acidity: Medium High Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium High

This greets the nose with notes of fresh cream, lime, a pinch of nutmeg and vanilla, all over deeply layered fruit. Pretty rich on the palate with supporting acids, this definitely makes in impression. There’s a fine creaminess to the texture here. Crème brûlée notes on the palate support flavors of ginger, pineapple and pithy citrus fruits. This is very well balanced, there are no edges and the oak plays a supporting role right through the moderately long apple and grapefruit pith finish, ending with a burst of bright spiciness. This is a bit more Chardonnay than I prefer in my glass but the quality is undeniable. 91pts

Nose broadcasts oaky, vanilla, melon hints. On the tongue, most of that is confirmed. Strong fruitiness—again, melon with some tropical fruits and, maybe some stone fruits—give the wine an almost sweet characteristic. There is some acid detected on the back of the throat which saves this wine.

Pretty big nose with multiple tropical fruit aromas--banana, pineapple. Pineapple, especially, hits the initial palate. I love the acid tartness that sort of continues the pineapple thing, but then morphs more to tart green apple. A very refreshing wine. US$18.49 at Costco in Chino Hills.

Bright, light white peach and lemon aromas. A hint of honey and cream, medium acidity, and apples in the palate. Sticks around quite a while in the mouth.

Nose of apple, pear, lemon, some floral notes and a hint of smoke. Nicely balanced oak and fruit on the palate, with hints of spicy oak. It lingers, smoky and rich. Very smooth and nice. - Tasted at winery 4/18/10

Nice and bright, with citrus and tropical fruit flavors bringing up the forefront, complemented by a Granny Smith apple backbone. Full-bodied, with nice notes of vanilla, hazelnut and cream. A well-crafted, well-balanced wine for sure.

Youthful greenish straw in color, this Chardonnay exhibits ripe fruit aromas of banana, apple, pear, coupled with tropical fruits. Adding to the complexity, the oak aging is fairly integrated adding spice, like nutmeg, vanilla, fresh coconut, and the nuance of angel food cake with a slight butterscotch. This wine has great viscosity, depth and an intriguing minerality. The flavors on the palate are predominantly citrus, lemon-lime and peach.

This oaky, fruity Chardonnay is lush and opulent. It has flavors of buttered toast, sweet cream, pineapples, tangerines, tropical-fruit jam, sautéed bananas and limes, accented with brisk acidity.

The 2012 Chardonnay is a non-malolactic, old style California Chardonnay that sees little new oak (about 15% new French is utilized). Lots of pear, lemon oil and citrus notes emerge from this crisp, medium-bodied, fresh, lively Chardonnay. Enjoy it over the next 4–5 years.

My favorite style of Chardonnay, the Freemark Abbey is classic California. Luscious toffee and butter give a full, round mouthfeel, while the sunny cantaloupe and banana peek from underneath, adding a brightness and lift. The oak is palpable, but not overwhelming. This is the kind of wine that just screams “fall.”

Very pretty lemon zest and green apple aromatics with some hay, vanilla, and coconut. Really round and well structured with more minerality coming across on the palate.

Sweet tangerine, tropical fruit and honey flavors mark this Chardonnay. It was wise on the winemaker’s part to avoid the malolactic fermentation, because the fresh apple acidity livens up the richness. With a touch of buttered toast from new oak barrels, it’s a savory wine to drink now.
