Freeman Pinot Noir Sonoma County Akiko's Cuvée 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Seared cherry fruit, beetroot, parsnip and lightly toasted wood greets the nose, to be joined by a touch of persimmon and some dried floral tones. This is smooth as silk and elegant on entry, though by no means meek. It delivers vivid, bright, expressive flavors of wild cherry framed with soft, well-judged notes of spice, herbs, and a gentle mineral backdrop. The balance is excellent: supple yet with a firm spine that offers nice cut on the backend and onto the long, succulently fruity finish. With time the mid-palate gains a nice aromatic quality, adding a touch of violet pastille to the array of floral notes, and the flavors gain the quality of sweet fruit without an impression of sweetness. There’s a touch of oak that emerges on the finish but it only adds to the complexity. This is singing today. 93pts

Freeman Vineyard & Winery is the fruition of a 20-year dream shared by Ken and Akiko Freeman to craft elegant cool climate California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in a sophisticated, Burgundian style. With a passion for fine wine and contemporary cooking’s wealth of exotic flavors, the Freemans strive to create wines with the depth and character to pair seamlessly with the abundance of modern, global cuisine. Believing in the vast potential of the Sonoma Coast to produce wines of complexity and refinement, after years of searching for the ideal site, the Freemans discovered a beautiful small winery in the picturesque Russian River Valley town of Sebastopol. Guided by the old winemaking adage that "wine is made in the vineyard,” the Freemans researched and visited over 200 individual vineyards, searching for hillside locations with coastal fog, Goldridge soil, proper clonal selection and stressed vines producing extremely low yields of nuanced fruit. The end result was Freeman Vineyard & Winery’s small portfolio of partner vineyards, including such renowned growers as Ted Klopp of Klopp Ranch, Marcy Keefer of Keefer Ranch, Charlie Heintz of Heintz Ranch and Dennis and Mary Black of Black Emerald Vineyard. Gorgeous nose, full of women’s perfume, underbrush, nutmeg, earth, sapwood, wild berries, and licorice root with wonderful intensity. On entry this is pretty big and a touch matte like a sandwich of acid with fruit serving as the bread. It’s packed with succulent fruit gently edged with spicy cinnamon and nutmeg tones though the fruit gently release the acid adding lift to the mineral laden wild raspberry fruit on the mid-palate. This needs another year to really open up but has all the ingredients to be a stunner. It ends with a subtle persistence, like the waves on the bay continuously grinding ashore. 94pts

This wine has a bright, juicy nose. Baking spices, some salted caramel. The palate comes with loads of spice, in a bigger, heartier profile. That is not to say it's unbalanced. Great layers. Putting it simply, it's a spice driven wine of berry fruit flavors. Hints of cranberry and pomegranate. Very nice finish. - Tasted at winery Feb 2011

Juicy ripe cherry aromas front for a rustic palate full of tar and tree bark and earth. Finishes clean, even though there's an earthy bite.

Cinnamon, honey, brown sugar, berries on the nose. Nice clean finish with a touch of acidity. Very good!
