What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Editorial Reviews

Gorgeous nose, full of women’s perfume, underbrush, nutmeg, earth, sapwood, wild berries, and licorice root with wonderful intensity. On entry this is pretty big and a touch matte like a sandwich of acid with fruit serving as the bread. It’s packed with succulent fruit gently edged with spicy cinnamon and nutmeg tones though the fruit gently release the acid adding lift to the mineral laden wild raspberry fruit on the mid-palate. This needs another year to really open up but has all the ingredients to be a stunner. It ends with a subtle persistence, like the waves on the bay continuously grinding ashore. 94pts

Reviews

Juicy ripe cherry aromas front for a rustic palate full of tar and tree bark and earth. Finishes clean, even though there's an earthy bite.
