Frederic Magnien Chablis les Clos 2005

I've had at best medium luck with Frederic Magnien wines, and I was concerned that the low price on this Grand Cru Chablis was not a good sign. However, it is excellent, displaying lots of flavor and class. Beautifully pure nose of Chardonnay fruit with no obvious oak character - lemon/lime citrus, mineral water, roasted nuts, and subtle notes of lees, smoke, and dried herbs. In the mouth, crisp and pure yet soft, round, and mouth-filling. Purchased during a super sale at North Berkeley for less than $25!

Born in May 1969, in one of the most beautiful wine growing regions in the world, Frédéric Magnien is a 5th generation wine producer from the Magnien family. While studying at the viticultural "Lycée" (high school) in Beaune, he was accustomed to helping his father in the vineyards and in the cellars. To gain experience with other wine producers, he participated in the 1986 wine harvest at Jean-Noël Gagnard’s estate in Chassagne-Montrachet. Eager to build his knowledge, he left to work abroad in 1992. He started with 4 months in California at Josh Jemsen's Calera estate, followed by 6 months in Australia with Garry Farr at the Bannockburn Vineyard estate. Returning in time for the 1993 harvest, he enrolled at the University of Dijon, where he graduated with his oenology diploma. In September 1995, he made one of the most important decisions of his life; he created a wine trade house under his own name: FREDERIC MAGNIEN. His objective is to distinguish the activities of a "wine producer" from that of a "wine maker": Frédéric Magnien does not own vineyards himself but provides an important consultancy role to the wine growers with whom he works closely throughout the year. This allows him to select plots mainly of old vines (over 40 years of age) and to buy very high quality grapes, at optimum maturity, from amongst the noblest Côtes de Nuits "appellations". He can therefore, at vinification stage and using identical casks and ageing, explore the aromatic diversity of the Côtes de Nuits "terroirs" (combination of local land and climate) building on the dedication of the wine grower. The House of Frédéric Magnien therefore started up in 1995 with 21 casks of 5 different "appellations". Yes, that's right...white burgundy from Monsieur Magnien! And this Chablis is one to set you on your toes. No wood, super clean with reserved aromatics of white stone fruit, quince and apple butter. The palate hints at mineral-robed layers of white peach, buttered toast with tendrils of pineapple and Meyer lemon souffle. A lingering finish of snappy pippin apple. The mouth feel is one of finessed muscle with a voluptuous leanness; a wine that doesn't demand your attention, but rewards it.
