- André and Frédéric Esmonin describe the 2001 vintage as producing wines that are very aromatically expressive with better raw material and concentration than the 2000 vintage. They report that yields were slightly lower (10% less) with sugars that came in between 11.8 and 12%, and the wines were chaptalized to 13%. The Esmonins favor early bottling and the '01s had been bottled just three weeks prior to my late November visit. The Esmonin wines generally offer excellent value and I have enjoyed good experience holding them to maturity though I would personally like to see a bit more read more...density. (Atherton Wine Imports, Atherton, California). Note: from purchased must Mocha, chocolate and strong torrefaction notes lead to somewhat ashy, round, simple flavors that are unfortunately quite dilute. Between the curious nose, lack of mid-palate density and only adequate persistent, this is very disappointing for its level. (hide)
