Fratelli Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very pretty on the nose with hints of mineral, tight little rose and iris notes, and gorgeous precision with a subtle liquory quality to the fruit. Round, ripe so complete on the palate, the texture here is seamless. The fruit is subtle and tight with dusty red fruits and nuanced hints of herb and mineral adding a touch of bitterness on the palate which adds some detail. Tight and sapid on the finish, this is reticent today but the texture is smashingly good, nuanced and faceted and just regal. 94pts

A little reticent on the nose but this builds fine tobacco notes, over great lingonberry fruit that shows a little wood sweetness, cigar box, and a little sweet Cognac cream note. Clear, firm, austere and bright in the mouth with red fruit cut by mineral notes in a powerful yet precise style. The tannins are ripe if just a touch bitter perhaps, though the are very well integrated with the black cherry fruit on the long, elegant finish. 93pts

A nice herbal edge shows up early on the nose followed by a fair amount of oak and leather. This is a bit soft with black fruit in the mouth in a fairly tannic, broad and low in the mouth style that is dark and muscular. It a bit small scaled, this none the less delivers lovely bitter black cherry fruit with a touch of a wild, animale character to it. 89pts

This has a great nose full of nettles, spices, rose petal, smoke and limestone, though not much fruit yet. Intense, round, rich and powerful on an entry that shows more flesh than many 2008s. The mid-palate offers lovely depth with rich wild berry fruit, dusty, austere tannins and hints of lingonberry and mint on the long, aromatic mineral-laced finish. This is a classic wine with great cut. This will be very, very good 93pts

Floral/vegetal notes dominate the nose over an underlay of almost slate like minerality, light note of cherry in alcohol, good freshness 2+ A touch soft yet elegant with an austere character, well balanced and approachable 2+ A touch low intensity on the palate with easy notes of lingonberry/mulberry fruit with a sandy, mineral edge 2+ Tannins grow a bit on the finish, which features pure, light fruit with good length, the tannins offer a bit of a matte, flannel feel to the finish 2+ 88pts

Despite the fact that the Baroli of the Castiglione sub-region are known for being stern and age-worthy, the Rocche vineyard, with its sandy soils, yields softer wines with enticing aromatics. Grown with a southeastern exposure, this one spends thirty months in French oak barrels, followed by a year of bottle aging before release. The wine is garnet in color and reminiscent of small red berries and licorice.
