Frankland Estate Chardonnay Frankland River Isolation Ridge Vineyard 2004
Frankland Estate produces limited quantities of chardonnay sourced from low-yielding Mendoza Clone vines in the Isolation Ridge vineyard. This clone of chardonnay is renowned for its millerandage or 'hen and chicken' combination of large and small berries in the same bunch. This results in low yields, especially where the proportion of small berries is high and, typically, produces highly concentrated flavours. In recent vintages with the aim of making our chardonnay fresher and tighter focused we have carried out extensive trials of earlier picking dates, more careful fruit selection criteria and the use of larger barrels for oak treatment.
External Reviews for Frankland Estate Chardonnay Frankland River Isolation Ridge Vineyard
Smooth, creamy texture glides softly over the palate as generous peach, melon and grapefruit are matched with rich toast, mineral notes and an elegant finish. A well-balanced chardonnay with a long persistent finish, showing fruit intensity and finesse right through the wine. Ready to drink now, this wine will also benefit from cellaring.
Readers looking for a distinctive Chardonnay that smells of lemon juice, orange blossom, and a hint of sealing wax should check out the 2004 Chardonnay Isolation Ridge. Some oak is utilized, but it is completely concealed by the wine’s minerality, precision, power, and length. It should be drinkable for 1–3 years.
