Frankland Estate Chardonnay Frankland River Isolation Ridge Vineyard 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Frankland Estate produces limited quantities of chardonnay sourced from low-yielding Mendoza Clone vines in the Isolation Ridge vineyard. This clone of chardonnay is renowned for its millerandage or 'hen and chicken' combination of large and small berries in the same bunch. This results in low yields, especially where the proportion of small berries is high and, typically, produces highly concentrated flavours. In recent vintages with the aim of making our chardonnay fresher and tighter focused we have carried out extensive trials of earlier picking dates, more careful fruit selection criteria and the use of larger barrels for oak treatment.

Fran k land Estate was estab lished in1988 by Bar rie Smith and Judi Cul lam who continue to be actively involved in every aspect of the vine yard and win ery. They are now assisted by their daugh ter Eliz a beth Smith, son Hunter Smith and a small, hard working team who enjoy the diverse and idio syn cratic chal lenges asso ci ated with work ing in a fam ily business. The Iso la tion Ridge vine yard lies on part of a farm where the fam ily have run a wool grow ing enter prise since 1974. The deci sion to diver sify their farm ing inter ests was inspired and informed by a tour of French vine yards Bar rie and Judi under took in 1985 and also by two vin tages they worked at Chateau Sene jac in Bordeaux. The wine mak ing philoso phies at Fran k land Estate reflect these influ ences as well as the hard-earned lessons gained from some 17 vin tages in the Fran k land River region. Our approach to wine mak ing is based on the prin ci ple that the most sig nif i cant charac ter is tics of a wine come from the soil and the vine yard envi ron ment. We aim to make wines that reflect nature rather than the hand of the wine maker. This is the basis of our com mit ment to sus tain able farm ing and to work ing the land in accord with the cycles of nature. We care fully nur ture the health of the soils in our vine yard and only take from our vine yards as much as can be replaced by nat ural processes. Our use of viti cul tural prac tices will result in us gain ing organic cer ti fi ca tion in 2009 but is already evi dent in the com plex ity, depth and inten sity of flavour in our wines. Read less

Smooth, creamy texture glides softly over the palate as generous peach, melon and grapefruit are matched with rich toast, mineral notes and an elegant finish. A well-balanced chardonnay with a long persistent finish, showing fruit intensity and finesse right through the wine. Ready to drink now, this wine will also benefit from cellaring.

Readers looking for a distinctive Chardonnay that smells of lemon juice, orange blossom, and a hint of sealing wax should check out the 2004 Chardonnay Isolation Ridge. Some oak is utilized, but it is completely concealed by the wine’s minerality, precision, power, and length. It should be drinkable for 1–3 years.

Almond, white pepper and citrus aromas start things off. In the mouth, it’s soft and delicate in feel, narrow but not simple or lean, with sweet fruit and a resin overlay.
