What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

2006 Frank Family Zinfandel Napa is dark and rich in color, reminiscent of violets. This classic Zinfandel leads with sweet blackberry jam, white and black pepper and clove spice. Further opulence emerges as layers of black cherry, blueberry and Asian spice are exposed. The palate is big, bold and ripe with juicy brambleberry and warm plum pudding, supported by integrated tannin and spice, giving a full mid palate and setting the stage for the long supple finish. This is a California Wine.

Nice nose starts of with some tarry, matchstick and milk chocolate notes that are joined by wild berry, boysenberry fruit tones and deep notes of spicy and pepper. A touch sweet up front then slick and polished with plenty of very fresh yet slightly exotic berry notes, boysenberry and even a touch of asphalt, chocolate shavings and dried ginger. Nice feel with good tannins and balanced acids. A very polished, complete wine with a long, fruity finish and beautiful youthful tannins. A bit rambunctious, rough and tumble but well done as such if a bit hot on the finish. 91pts
